I'm not sure if anyone remembers the thread about D&D rules that I posted several months ago. I finally got the game and installed it in my computer. It took me a while to get used to the rules.
Ubereil, if you like the fighter class, don't take the plain fighter. Take the kits instead. You can choose between Kensai or Berserker.
Kensais are lethal at higher levels because they gain +1 to hit and +1 damage for every three levels. Make him a half orc kensai with 19 STR and 19 CON (you don't need INT and WIS, but you might want high CHA to get cheaper prices in stores). Have him dual wield either longswords, axes, and/or warhammers (I prefer longswords, though axes might be better). On the downside, a Kensai cannot wear any armor. But you can use rings, cloaks, amulets that give bonuses to Armor Class.
As an alternative, you could choose a dwarven or half orc berseker. Half orc is better because a dwarven fighter receives -1 penalty to DEX and -2 to CHA. A Berserker has a special ability to enrage which gives may bonuses to lots of stuff (like immunities to charm, fear, imprisonment, etc).
If you don't want pure fighter, then you could choose multi/dual class characters (fighter/druid, fighter/cleric, fighter/mage, fighter/thief)
Ubereil, if you have any problems with the game, I'd be glad to help out (I'm not saying I'm an expert, though).
I hate this game because it makes me loose my appetite and unable to sleep at night.

I hate this game because it makes me loose my appetite and unable to sleep at night. I checked the strategy guide at game banshee (exelent site btw) and they mentioned that as a thief you'll be able to use any kind of equipment. So, as a kensai/thief you would be able to use any kind of equipment (includewing armor...), but since I don't have a book I'm not shure how to do this (ir if it's true at all). And I wasn't thinking of picking pure fighter, since I don't see any advantages with it. I'm currentlly playing my human inqisitor (18/95 str, 10 dex, 16 con, 9 int, 18 wis, 18 cha. Decent stats I think), and I might screw anything that even have the slightest connection to characterbuild and continue on that char (this is basiclly against my principes, but I don't whant to restart half way through to find out I've lost the fun in the game AGAIN), but I havn't exactlly come far. I'm on prison lvl 2... Übereil PS I notice I'm getting a big party. I hope the game is more varied than ID2... DS

BGII – SoA/ToB
Is wholly a role playing game with plenty of challenging battles. It is not a H-n-S (Hack-n-Slash) game like IWD-HoW/ToTL or IWDII. Tactics are the key to success in BGII and knowing that you might have to leave something alone for awhile and fight it later when you are more powerful.
What makes BGII so great is the dialogs between you the player and the NPC’s you choose to be part of your party.
I am a goof ball I know, but I was in tears to have to say good-bye to my NPC friends in BGII. They came alive.
Good luck, have fun, and happy hunting.

Tsel, have you ever played Planescape:Torment? If you have: did you like it? If you havn't: play it! It's great (espessially when it comes to npc-interraction. Morte rules (but that's not the only reason I picked him as my ava...)).

I am currently in the middle of a PS:T game. I just got Fall-From-Grace in my party. Spoiler : I tried fighting that Wizard in the Mechanical cube, but tenth level isn’t powerful enough to beat him yet so I’m off to do other things. I laughed a whole lot talking to the guy with the wooden head and helping Eccho to talk again. Very funny.

Pity I never finnished Ps:T . I got to whasteland (or whatever the name is...) but then I realized I'd planned my stats wrong (see pre-previous post) and restarted. Trying to get back to where I was before was a complete walkthrough, no fun at all . And now, back to my BG2-char... Übereil Edit: When I realized I wasn't in the end of the game when I stopped I tried to do it all again though. Got to lower wards somewhere (outside of the foundry/factory... You know, where the godsmen are! Morte get's kidnapped there...). And now, back to my BG2-char... Did I say that?

Yes, you did I checked the strategy guide at game banshee (exelent site btw) and they mentioned that as a thief you'll be able to use any kind of equipment. And I wasn't thinking of picking pure fighter, since I don't see any advantages with it. True. But you have to wait until late game to be able to use that ability. The general consensus is that multi or, especially, dual class characters are better than pure characters in the long run because of their versatility. As for fighter/thief characters, some people even say that you can actually go solo with them, although I don't see how that's possible seeing how tough the enemies are (especially the mages) in many areas of the game. Good stats, but you might want to use Gauntlets of Dexterity for better defence to compensate for your low DEX. You can find it under the temple district while you're doing the Unseeing Eye quest.

It is possible to solo in BGII. A Sorcerer can solo with no problems at all, but you need to really know your spells and make sure you pick them wisely, because you will be stuck with those spells until the end of the game, that is unless you cheat.
But soloing in BGII takes OUT 90% of all of the fun. BGII is all about the Character and NPC interactions. That’s what makes the game so great.

I finished the game with the druid specialist shifter - wherewolf, with all the party - the game isnt't that easy to play solo. Like you said maybe a wizard can do it - but i still have some doubts about it, cause with all that wizards and dragons what you have to fight against.
To me the fight against dragons are the most fun in the game.

Btw sorry for the delay to answer. I don't think it's impossible but i still think it's much hard to do.

Tactics Hints for playing BGII:
One of the biggest things a player needs to know when playing BGII is knowing what the Spells and Potions do and how to defend against them or counteract them.
For example: There are three different types of Sequencer Spells in BGII; Low, Medium, and Higher Level. A Sequencer can hold up to 3 Spells and when set up become a quick icon to use for instant casting. For example if you run into a Dragon they always have a 60% to 100% immunity to spells. The first thing a dragon usually hits you with is its Breath weapon. So have your Cleric or Druid summon some creatures and have those creatures attack the Dragon. At the same time, if you have two Wizard types in your party they can both blow out two sequencer spells at once each holding 3 Lower Resistance spells. (Lower Resistance: Lowers magical resistance of target by 10% +1% per level of caster) After that any spell cast on the Dragon is pretty much a guarantee to do damage. Remember at higher levels you have 3 sequencer spells so you have two more left. The Dragon will waste its Breath Weapon on the summoned creatures. That will allow your Fighter(s) and Thieves to move in and wail on it. The Wizard(s) can use their other sequencer spells. A simple Magic Missile gets to be a pretty powerful spell at higher levels. As does the spell Chromatic Orb. If you use this kind of tactic you’ll defeat that Dragon so fast and easy you’ll think, ‘What? That’s it?’
Golems are a big headache in BGII, but there is a simple way to get rid of them. Use your Wizards Eye to see them and then Cast Cloud Kill in their area and in a few rounds Bye-Bye Golem. You do not have to confront them toe to toe and fight.
Wizards are another problem to deal with in BGII, but you have all of these spells:
Remove Magic: Dispels magical effects of all enemies in the area Spell Thrust: Dispels target's protection spells of 5th level or lower Breach: Breaches and dispels all the specific and combat protections on the target Warding Whip: Dispels one spell protection per round Spellstrike: Dispels all of target's magic protections regardless of magical resistance Greater Malison: All hostile creatures in area receive -4 penalty to all saves
That you could throw in a Sequencer spell and remove all of their protections. Then your Melee characters can wail on them and you can hit them with another of your sequencer spells holding something like 3 Flame Arrow spells. (Flame Arrow: 5-30 damage per bolt, 1 bolt per 5 levels of caster) That Wizard will be toast.
These are only a tiny, tiny fraction of the tactics that could be used in BGII. Know your Spells and the Potions.
Enjoy Tsel

Hi
After finishing DD (great game) I started playing BG2 SOA & TOB (first time) - started in Nov last year. BG2 is very epic and has some great dialogue. I mixed and matched npcs so I could get their quests and settled on Minsc, Jahiera, Imoen, Jan and Keldorn. I've just finished Watchers Keep and heading back to take on Sendai. It has been quite an adventure!!
I'm playing with Unfinished Business, Ascension, Banter pack and Ease of Use mods.

Welcome to the forum pantheon
Good luck with Sendai. She is by far, one of my top three picks, of the hardest enemy to take care of in Throne of Bhaal. I even fought her with the Improved Sendai mod installed once. That made her insanely hard to deal with, but eventually I found a tactic that worked.
Later on, enjoy, and happy hunting. Tsel

Hi Tsel. Thanks for the welcome.
Yes, Sendai has proved a mighty battle.
I have been playing on hard mode. A very enjoyable, tactical battle. The first time a beat the statues around the edges I thought thats it - all done, but boy was I wrong!
It took six very long battles before victory. I actually stopped and went through my inventory ungrading everyones weapons - which I haven't needed to do for other battles. Great fun!
What are the other two great battles?

These are my top pick spells that will save your skin big time in BGII.
Protection From Evil: +2 saves vs evil creatures, evil creatures have -2 attack roll penalty. (NOTE: This also protects you from Demons that have been summoned.)
Protection From Petrification: Grants target immunity to petrification attacks.
Resist Fear: Removes magical fear and raises morale. (NOTE: You can also cast this ahead of time to protect you.)
Minor Globe of Invulnerability: Magical sphere surrounds caster that stops 1st, 2nd and 3rd level spells.
Spirit Armor: Caster recieves AC 1 and +3 saves vs. magical attacks. (NOTE: By far the best spell armor for a mage in the game.)
Stoneskin: Caster is invulnerable to 1 attack per two levels of caster. (NOTE: Cast this along with Spirit Armor and you are as well protected as a fighter is.)
Minor Spell Turning: Rebounds 4 spell levels back to the caster.
Spell Immunity: Grant caster immunity to one school of magic.
Spell Shield: Caster is protected from the next magical attack.
Globe of Invulnerability: Protects caster from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th level spells.
Protection From Magic Energy: Target receives 100% immunity to all magical damage.
Protection From Magic Weapons: Grants caster complete immunity to all magical weapons for 4 rounds.
Spell Deflection: Absorbs a total of 10 spell levels directed against the caster.
Mantle: Invulnerability to all weapons except +3 weapons or better.
Protection From the Elements: 75% immunity to all electical, fire, and ice attacks.
Spell Turning: Reflects 12 spell levels back at enemy caster.
Improved Mantle: Complete invulnerability to all weapons except +4 or better for 4 rounds.
Protection from Energy: 75% immunity to all energy attacks including fire, cold, acid, magic, and elec, both magical and non-magical.
Simulacrum: A duplicate of the caster is created with 60% of caster's power. (NOTE: This is one of my favorites. Basically you make a lesser clone of yourself.)
Spell Trap: Absorbs 30 spell levels directed at caster and allows caster to rememorize spells.
Restoration: Cures all adverse effects such as poison and disease and restores all HPs and level or ability drains.
Zone of Sweet Air: Removes toxic vapors in a 30-yard radius from the caster.
Death Ward: Protects one creature from death magic such as Disintegrate or Power Word Kill.
Free Action: makes target immune to the effect of hold, paralysis, or slowing.
Negative Plane Protection: Protects targeted creature from energy drains/level or ability drains. (NOTE: A huge life saver when fighting undead.)
Chaotic Commands: Makes one target immune to magical commands such as charm, confusion, sleep, and domination. (NOTE: Just have this spell always cast on each party member. You will be happy you did.)
Insect Plague: summons a swarm at insect towards a targeted enemy, after which the swarm spreads out, covering the 5 nearest enemies. (NOTE: This is a good spell to cast ASAP on enemy spell casters. It will disrupt their spells almost 100% every time.)
Creeping Doom: summons a horde of insects to bite and sting the target enemy (and nearby enemies) for 6 rounds, dealing 2 pts. of damage per *second* and disabling the enemy's ability to cast spells. (NOTE: This one is even better than Insect Plague, but keep them both and use them.)
Final thing: Potions of Master Thievery. Keep this in mind. They stack when you drink them. If one doesn’t do the trick, drink two. If two doesn’t do the trick drink three. Then you can steal and sell things back to that Female vendor in the Thieves Guild all day long and never get caught. That way you build up your gold count real quick like so you can buy all that awesome magic stuff at the ‘Adventure Mart’.
