You should update directx and after that video drivers.
for directx version press start->run-> type -> dxdiag. You will see version.

This depends on how sensitive is NWN towards any other programs running in background.

I had actually the same problem on my friend's PC running Prince of Persia.
His problem was - insuficcient RAM. It maybe be the same with you. Check NWN readme for minimum requirements.
I would suggest upgrade RAM in both cases to at least 512Mb
