I've got another hint: stick around for a while in the early levels. It should be easy enough to avoid the baddies. Don't eat the last little mushroom yet, wait until a 1up-imp appears and catch it. I don't know if there can appear more than one 1up-imp in one level. If that's possible, you could basically stick around in level one until you have 20 ups or so. But even if that's not possible, you should be able to get at least 3 extra ups after the first 3 levels.
