Actually, I don't like hack & slash at all ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />
Fargo: This week our massive blowout of Champions of Norrath coverage really got me to thinking about that age-old debate: What's more fun? The in-depth storytelling and character development of genuine roleplaying? Or the pure rush of lots of awesome combat with cool items and weapons?
shaithis: Let me just preface my argument by saying outright: I love killin'.
Fargo: You do your parents proud.
shaithis: And hack-n-slash is all about killing, without all that other stuff to get in the way. Like laughable dialogue trees. So normally, for me, it's all about kills-per-second, and even kills per mouseclick. Unless you can describe the gameplay to me as "cutting a swath" through a level, I may get bored.
Fargo: Whenever we play massively multiplayer games together, I can always tell where your character's been because the livestock is dead and the women are crying.
shaithis: BUT, I also like to consider the style of the carnage. Swords? They'll do. But shotguns are widely accepted to be cooler. The original Fallout was right on: little bit of talkin', little bit of boomstick.
Fargo: You've obviously put a lot of thought into this...
and that frightens me.
What do YOU play RPGs for? Speak up:
