I am sorry but I don´t find that stupid at all. I mean it makes perfect sense to me. You made a deal with the Orcs. How about you found the axe and give it to them and then they turned up to be hostile and kill you? Now that would be stupid for me.
In fact in this game the orcs are considered to be an honoraable race.
