In Germany, we have an old song going like this :

"Am dreißigsten Mai ist der Weltuntergang ... wir leben nicnht mehr lang ..." (Jolly tune )

The song says that the world is "going under" at Mai, 31st and that "we" (obviouslythe singer and the listeners ) won't live very long anymore ... the song is in a very jolly mood, very merrily played ... obviously it's a fun song.

Maybe the Mayan calander ended on that day because all the Mayan calender carvers were killed befor they could carve anymore days...
Hey Faile, speaking of the Mayans, they had a special place for July 26. Would you happen to know the significance of this day for them? I have read that there is a pillar at the center of a huge plaza in one of their cities that is only 1 foot high and casts no shadow at noon on that day. I can't remember where it was, but when reading about it, I thought it would be really cool to set a perfect crystal there on on July 26 just to see what would happen... (Mslynx, hoping it wouldn't be a big, "Wooopsie! Did I do that?")

well, the world doesn't exactly end, there's just some huge change that will take place and life as we know it will end. i think. i'm no expert.

july 26th seems to be the egyptian new year from what i can find on the internet. there are some scholars that think egyptians may have been to the americas long long long before columbus. (try searching for info on the olmec heads, or similarities in egyptian and mexican pyramids. there are some crazy architectural and astrological similarities.)

now i read that the mayan new year is also july 21st. here is an excerpt (but the website did not seem entirely credible):

Quote
The Galactic Year of 12 Manik begins on July 26th when the star Sirius greets Lord Sun at dawn (above the Mayan pyramid of Chichen Itza, and above Maui's volcano, Mount Haleakala).

i found this on a random forum:
http://www.tortuga.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.pl?s=401c88970843ffff;act=ST;f=1;t=381

Quote
The reason for why the Mayan new year is when it is:

"The thirteen moon calendar is a galactic calendar.
It is galactic, because the start of the new year is based on a galactic reference point, the star Sirius, and not a lunar or solar one (such as the summer solstice, etc.)

July 26 is the day that the star Sirius rises in conjunction with the Sun.

It is interesting to note that the Haab and Tun Uc calendars of the Mayans and the calendar of Thoth in ancient Egypt also began on the day July 26th.

Sirius - "A star in the constellation Canis Major, the brightest star in the sky, approximately 8.6 light-years distant from Earth. Also called Dog Star, Sothis."

i'm assuming that the pillar is there just to mark the day, probably served some purpose in ceremonies.
hope this helped. i love history.

now again a bit

@ NeroJB and at all friends of Lucretia:

I recently got a message by her and she told me that she couldn´t understand the word "giggle" Nero wrote at the end of his joke. She even thought this would mean something insulting.

But if the world doesn't end, does it have a use?

What's the meaning of life, kabuti?
What is the point in living if we'll die at the end anyway?

Just asking. Not trying to depress anyone .
