Hello. Following the announcement, the Demo will be out about next week. So I decided to canalize everything here in this thread, impressions, suggestions, bug reports, and everything else. @Larian Studios : Keep up the good work ! Alrik.

WOW, I first joined when I had some problems with Divine Divinity crashing ( a year ago) ,and have been visiting these forums at least once a month, just to see what's been happening. So when I heard about Beyond Devinity demo ,I just had to log on (took me 10 minutes to remeber the pswd). High hopes that this one will be even better, I just hope there will be less huge generic boring hack and slash areas that seemed to make Divinity so monotous at some parts, not to mention the end. Anyways ,can't wait to try the demo, and if the game ends up being even half as good as Divinity , am in.

The press release about the demo isn't listed on the BD site in the frame at the right under latest news, but should be.

Ok ,the DEMO will be released on 12:00PM on 3/3/2004 right ? ==> does this mean the coming night at 00:00:01 ? this is Wednesday night afterall ... ?
Since 12:00 PM (Post Meridiem) , would mean that this would be 12 hours after wednesday noon , so Thursday Night . . .
What did they mean ? Does anyone know for certain ?

If they'd have said 12:00 it would have been less confusing.
[digression] For the record, 12:00AM is midnight, 12:00PM is midday. Mind you, did you know that 24:00 (midnight at the END of the day rather than the midnight at the START of the day) is also a valid time according to international time standards. One (just one) of my digital clocks in the house goes to 24:00 at midnight! Freaks me out every time I see it!
Anyway, roll on tomorrow - only 12 hours to go until download time!
(Or maybe, 12 hours to go until frustration time because everyone else is downloading it at the same time...)

Thanks for the answer. Have we to register and pay for downloading the demo ? I am disappointed because i would have liked to let the PC run during the night for downloading the demo. I think i have to wait until tomorrow. About 11 hours !

It's just a pay SITE. You don't pay for the demo only. Guess folks outside Belgium have to wait till tomorrow. it'll be a long night. Hope it's worth the wait.

Well, this is maybe a real remark :
I read on the forum of the "Spelletjesgarnaal" that a person went through the demo in one hour!! 1 hour for Act 1...djeez. If this is true this seems really quick. Is this possible or did this guy just tried to make me worry...
I guess I'll find out in a couple of hours...
PS : 12:00 GMT is 1 o'clock in the afternoon in Brussels (13:00). I just heard some people saying that it would be available in Belgium at noon. Actually it will be one hour later.

I believe the demo includes the early part(not entire part) of ACT 1. If it's in this case one hour is fair amount of time to clear it for some rusher. Of course I cloud be wrong...

Only 10 min left to complete the download. but i have to leave for work in 11 min. Mmm, 1 minite to install the demo and play it?
AAArgh,
scenario: A) go to work with my bicicle. ride for 1 whole houre. in the mean time dreaming on my "stearing wheele" about the wonders within the demo. B) then go to work realising this last for 8 houres..aarg. C) getting frustrated after 4 houres, realising every body else is probably playing the demo already. D)finished work and have to bike 1 houre again to go back home. riding just in a -strait line- between work and home. trough fields and buildings only with one word in my head repeating "demo demo demo"

REALLY good to hear! Now it gives me another look on the game. Thought this was the full act 1 (way to short). I'm just a little bit scared for the play-duration of . I hope it's not too short because of worktime...
Greetings!

Ok played the demo (finished in 1/2 hour )
Some things: 1. Way to short!! 2. Nice atmosfeer 3. Nice quests (there are 3 in demo). 4. Voice could be better at certain points.
Thats about it for now

when does this rat tyhing happen everyones talking about!!!! Just go hostile on rats, and watch when your characters attack; they will kick part of the time. For the rats in the cell east of Edmond's, either the hero or DK have to enter and go at least half way into the cell.

As I said game == beyond great. But theire are a couple of faults that I have discoverd. I hope these are helpfull in making the final game better.
1. select all keyboard button & priority button. I realy hate that every time I need to select all my chars I have to move my mouse aaaaaaaallllllll the way to the other side of the screen to press that button. A keyboard button would be helpfull here.
2. Voice acting => needs work (sorry guys but just MHO) Is theire even a way to silence the voices. I can't stand that DK.
3. pathfinding isn't always on target. I wanted to lift a lever and he walks out the room behind the wall to to lever and can't touch it, while I clearly had the mouse pointer on the lever.
4. not so much an issue in the demo but when theire are more chars a formation would be nice. You know first the warriors, then the mages, than the survivors.
5. this just an observation but when I read the interview theire was talk about comlicates AI tactics. Since this is the beginning of the game I saw very little of it. I always play with mage/warrior and furgus has no chance agianst my mage. All braun and no brain sort of speak.
6. Is theire a way to move the minimap? i am used of having it in my lower left corner.
7. battles. Ok now that we're with 2 the pause button is being used a lot more. But the actual battle seems a bit slow. Is this because the speed skillpoints are a bit low or something else but a tiny bit faster wouldn't hurt. The pause buttons allow it.
8. little hint: more pictures with skill system please.
But don't be mistaken the demo is great and ooooooooow sooooooo gooooooooood

i feel sorry for the actor who did the DK's voice, everyone says hes bad and all. I personally like it, or at least dont hate it.
what do you mean by slow battles???
and cant you click and drag the minimap??/ hmm.
yes, i like it not so in the middle of the screen, but i dont really need it. NOW. but probably in the real game i will

The voice is great but it just doesn't fit the DK. Its more of a robotic sound.
As for the speed of battles. I use the pause buttons so much that most of the tme i pause and switch attacks when the prevous attack is still going on. With furgus for instance I had som problem with the DK. I tried switching weapons most of the time but I was to fast for my own good. Strange thing is that for tha mage it is just perfect (maybe because he uses ranged attacks.)

how do you use mage???
i never had any spells in the begiining? or do you wait to level up??
and are the warrior spells always worrking? the ones that do more damage? or do i have to use em?
passive, thats it! are they passive?
yes, its a great voice. maybe use it for another character? i dont think i voice like that should be wasted, it just doesn't fit the context. but its okay. i dont mind it, just if you can do anything 'bout it. or is to late???

You can adjust the voice volume, though this effects all voices.
Click on the edge of the mini-map to move it, on the artwork. Clicking on the mini-map itself, you can order your characters somewhere (areas you have covered) with much less clicking.

Starting skills availability are determined when you choose the skill types for your characters. For warriors, this includes the passive 'melee | one handed | slashing | damage/accuracy/etc' and other options. Edmond can teach you an elemental missile attack. You need to get to level 2 before being able to use any skills, though, so you start off melee.

I've heard the rumor that the German Demo doesn't have any voiceacting at all, so I can't say anything to this until the full game (supposed this is true)

The DK's voice wasn't great, but it was acceptable.
The worst voice acting was from the soldier on the west side of the prisons. He's got a lisp and it makes him sound so harmless and peaceful, even though he's supposed to be a though prison guard from another dimension. Pretty sad the way he says "Oh yes yes, you will leave this place... in a wooden box". It makes him about as fearful as a little bunny wunny.
The best voice acting is the prisoner in the top-left prison, you know, the one that thinks you're a demon and doesn't want you to eat his crunchy pieces (or what was it again?). Brilliant

and the ranger in the room of the men who think your gideon, his voice is WAY to high and frightful for a guard.
also, yes, the same one you talked about Tovi. that guy says it way to fast.
you will leave here, yes, in a wodden box.
or whatever. or, feet first.
WAY to fast. and it shouldn't be hard to fix him right? just one guys voice? three lines to be recorderd.

I haven't got into the game yet, because, while I generally don't care much about graphics (though that's not an issue since the game looks great graphiclly) the one thing I am bothered by is aliasing. And anti-aliasing isn't working on this. I use a Radeon 9600, and if I set aliasing to application preference and check the "FSAA" box in the Beyond Divinity config box, then I go in, and, judging from the model that it uses for creating your charecter, it's not working. I go back to config and sure enough the FSAA box is unchecked- it unchecks it when I launch the game. I tried setting my card to 6x AA, but that didn't work either. Anyone know why this demo doesn't work with AA and if it can be fixed?

It's here!
I want to know if there will be a cinematic scene preceding the beginning of the game. It doesn't have to be 3D and all that like in the the first game; if it used the in- game graphics it would be fine. But it's very weak story-telling if this is the actual beginning of the game - you just start out in the dungeon with only a few sentences from the death-knight to tell you what is going on. At least include the backstory in the manual.
Well that's my gripe, and hopefully it's unjustified. I love the actual demo. I don't have any complaints about the voice acting or graphics or control or any of that. And I'm trusting all the little imperfections will get polished up in the next month or so.

I see only 2 main problems:
1.) Not being able to set up keys to scroll east/west/north/south. 2.) It is VERY hard to move anything. Sometimes it works right away, sometimes it takes 15 attempts. Examples are barrels/chairs/garbage..picking up decapitated heads..hands. I cannot figure out why this happens, and I've played around with it for a long time trying to find a common occurrence when this happens. I'd say it's a pain to move/grab normal items at least 75% of the time. I've tried it in every resolution of the game.

Press CAPS-LOCK or hold SHIFT and use the mouse to scroll the screen. 2.) Click on or next to the object to get as close as possible before trying to move it. The object must be glowing white, not red, before you can move it. I hope this helps and sorry if it doesn't!

1.) I don't want to use the mouse to scroll the screen at all. I want to be able to do it with my left hand while using the mouse cursor to go over items. 2.) I know how to move the items and that they have to be white. The problem is, even when you are close and they are white, they refuse to move half the time.
Thanks anyway.

Did I miss this, or is there no way to auto-attack? DD had some way that you could control-click or something to automatically attack the nearest enemy so you didn't have to constantly chase them with your mouse. I see no way to do this in BD. Also, how do you auto-select your whole party, is there no shortcut for this? Clicking that button is a nuisance. However, the demo is very fun and the graphical additions are great!

auto-attack => CTRL+ target with mouse click, left or right (depending on your primary/secondary skill). As long as you see the enemy bar, the chars will attack. Magic has to be clicked over and over again - weapon combat is done automatically with one left click. Auto-select party => TAB (control keys)

That's not much of an auto-target considering you have to hold down ctrl then click on the target. Or can you just click anywhere? Didn't try it myself.

ok I finished the demo, it was way to short comparing to DD demo. but overall feeling about the demo is that the full game would be great ! anyway two things I'd like to comment
- as for the DK's voice...I hope his voices are more deep and tough to matching for his dark look. His grunt and death sounds during the battle are excellent and give me some dark and gruesome feeling...but voice tone in the actuall conversation seems a bit light and little. give him some "Tougher" voice plz.
- character modelling....I actually have not much complaints about this but it would be great at least main characters(including DK) have more poly counts for better look. I presume all the guys in this forum know upcomming action RPG "SACRED", it's demo also came out a little ago. I was amazed when I saw character models especially female character "Seraphim", beautiful and very female feel and "SEXY". Frankly I was disappointed with the female model in the BD demo, she dose not look like female for me.(especially I don't like her Big Foot) I hope the main character models have more poly in the full version.
great job Larian !

Hi there !
Really loved the demo but i've got one little question.
Anyone knows if the quality of the 2d backdrops will be better in the full version when zoomed in ? problem is that the 3D models stay nice and crisp but the backdrop become painfully ugly and pixelated when totaly zoomed upon, gives quite a contrast.

I think that would require Larian to make 2 whole, seperate background sets and make the game huge in size.

Going back to this... It doesn't work for me! I hold down Ctrl, the enemy's red ring lights up, I left-click (anywhere) once, and... either nothing happens or my character runs over to where I clicked. If it worked, I wouldn't be complaining about it. Ctrl-click was the first thing I tried in combat, expecting it to work the same as DD. Imagine my dismay (etc etc).

Just my .02 cents, after spending a couple of hours with the demo last night:
1) I have to agree with those complaining about the targeting -
a) it is VERY difficult to pick up and move garbage, decapitated heads, rotten food, etc. It is incredibly frustrating that it takes 7-10 tries before picking something up. Actual "drop" items (gold, weapons, potions, etc) are very easy to click on and pick up, but "interactive" items are much more difficult.
b) Targeting enemies is much too difficult. It seems that you have to click on their torso, not on the ring below their feet, and even then my character seems to move more often than attack. I have used the CTRL button, and that works for basic (left-click) attacks, but in my experience, it doesn't seem to work for right-click attacks (see next item).
2) I can't get right-click attacks to work when both characters are selected. It seems like I have to pause, select one character, target the enemy, right-click, then select second character, target enemy, right-click. I would like to hold down CTRL and right-click for "special" attack from both characters simultaneously - but can't get that to work. right-click only seems to work for me if only one of my characters is selected. Is this correct? For example, my main character has a spell in the right-click slot (fire arrow or something - learned from Edmond) and the DK has whirlwind. Right-clicking with both players selected does nothing, but selecting one at a time does work. Very tedious, though!
3) Pause does not work when you are holding down the CTRL key! Maybe this is a Windows limitation, but it is sure frustrating. Since targeting is so difficult, I tend to hold down CTRL during all battles, and in one case it was getting down to the wire - either my DK or the Skeleton was going to die very soon. When it became apparent that my DK was probably going to lose, I tried to pause to collect myself and drink a potion - but it didn't work! After clicking the space bar 3 times (thinking my keyboard was going wonky), my DK died, and it was only later that I realized it was because I was instinctively holding down the CTRL button during battle. (maybe re-mapping from CTRL to a different key would help?)
4) Other minor frustrations -
a) Edmond disappears(?) after the first encounter. Since I didn't have enough gold to learn both skills the first time, I bought one of them, ran around and killed some things to get more gold, and came back - only to find there was no Edmond and no tunnel...
b) On a related note, and to make it even MORE frustrating - it turns out I did have enough gold, but since each character holds onto their own gold, it told me I didn't have enough. Why isn't gold pooled for all characters? Is there actually a situation where it will be beneficial to have separate gold stashes for each character? It's going to get really frustrating if we have to keep swapping gold back and forth between characters to make purchases. I can understand if gold has weight, and therefore must be distributed between characters so that no character is "encumbered", but shouldn't the total amount of gold be available to all characters, regardless of who is carrying it? (Maybe I'm just too used to Baldur's Gate and similar games where gold is not an inventory item)
c) The screen scrolling takes a lot of getting used to, and tends to scroll WAY too fast for my liking. If I move the mouse toward the bottom of the screen to click on a door or other item, and move the mouse that extra cm too far, the screen starts scrolling like crazy. As others have mentioned, I would prefer a keyboard option to move the screen, or at least slow down the scrolling a little bit. Maybe I've just been playing BG II too much lately, so I'm used to the much slower, more controlled scrolling in that game?
d) Inventory is a bit frustrating. Having to drag items all the way across the screen to the portrait to transfer between characters is more work than it should be. I can see that I'll never be able to play this on my laptop, because I don't have the dexterity to drag items over long distances using the touchpad. Inevitably I would end up dropping half the items before they got to the character.
---
Overall, I'm still excited about this game, and looking forward to its release. However, if the targeting is as poor in the full game, I can see myself getting very frustrated and quitting before the end. I play RPG's to "get away" for awhile and take a break from the frustrations of every day life - so any unnecessary aggravation within the game just defeats the whole purpose for me...
OK, so that was a little more than .02 cents - sorry!
Cheers,
John (aka Lord Bubba)

Good post. Edmond doesn't disappear, he's just insanely hard to find/see if he's running along one of the east walls. He could be closer to the ladder than where you first saw him, along one of the walls where you can't see him at all. Run your cursor around the walls and you'll find him eventually.

On a good note, I believe the developers are listening intently to these points being made about the game. I would expect a good number of the suggestions to be implimented.

Ok got the demo.
After reading a few forum posts, I thought the demo was incomplete, with horrible voice acting and awful combat. With grim thoughts I downloaded and installed the demo. I ran it and came to the menu. First, I waited a bit and listened to the music. Not Kirill's best but acceptable. Then I started my character creation... I was amazed by so many choices. Sure NWN allowed you to select fat, slim or normal but here the customization is excellent: Hair colour, Hair style, Body type, face, gender. Also I expected to have to chose from fighter/mage/thief but there's a fourth, custom option! Well, I didn't bother much with the skills and stats so I took Survivor, with survivol skills. Then came the ability to customize your deathknight. Of course, his name and appearance is already defined and you cannot change it but you chose his stats and skills. Since I thought about playing a ranger, I made my DK a fighter for protection. As I started the game, I watched as the DK entered the cell and prepared for worst: from the forum posts I read, the actor who did the voice should be horribly mutilated with a watermelon. To my surprise, the DK spoke in exactly the SAME voice as I wanted him to. A bit monotonous, a little disdainful, with a slight european accent. I started speaking with him and in a while, we went exploring the cells. Now about the graphics: they're good. Not excellent but I've seen much worse. The animations seemed abit ghostly at the beginning but as I progressed and added points into agility and speed, my characters became faster. At full zoom, as expected the background becomes blurry, but it's still a useful feature for combat. The spell effects are as well done as DD's. The controls were better than I expected. As soon as I started, I decided to throw some junk arround. It worked just like in DD. I had no trouble clicking on the rotten food and throw it into lava. Later, for fun, I've beaten a guard to death with a couple of chairs. So, as you see, trowing works. I also checked the Party Menu (TAB), a useful feature to select all the characters but to select them individually, I'd rather use F1-F2. You can move the camera freely or if you senter it on your hero, it will follow you. Usually it's tricky business so it's better just to double click on the portrait or click twice the corresponding F# key. The pathfinding was not perfect. Once my characters kept running arround a ranger as he shot them with his crossbow and nothing could make them attack the enemy, so I decided to use the chairs. Once my main character stood at the same place as the enemy (the circle under them was purple [blue+red]) and some other time, my DK stuck after the whirwill attack. I am certain, though, that Larian would fix that. I tried to make my characters run across the map. They sucessfully overran obstacles and entered rooms without hitting the walls (which happened often in BG: some characters like Jaheira were strangely attracted to walls and fences). The dialogues were sometimes funny, often enterteining and well written. The characters were believable and some were interesting. The DK kept commenting my actions. In general, the voice acting is perfectly alright, except for a guard and one imp (his voice was feeble and borred, in addition, he never said "flix" or "flax", which made me think he wasn't a real imp and gave me a reason to slay him ). Some guards had irony in their voice and the "helpful" DK never missed an opportunity to critisize everyone arround.
In whole, the demo is very entertaining, albeit short. The models exceeded expectations (especially the imps: I loved the "kitchen cleaning imp", as she jumped arround my character and the DK) and the dialogues are good enough for me. The puzzles and quests are trully great, I won't spoil it for you, but scouting and searching really helps . The skill system was very strange to me, I guess I'll get used to it but I never seen anything like that.
[color:"white"] Demo score: 4/5
[color:"red"] Pros: Another great game by Larian with excellent quests and innovative ideas. Good graphics and puzzles.
[color:"red"] Cons: Mysterious pathfinding. Some voices are wierd (the prisoner who gives you the Traps book has a robot voice). Short (not really a con since it's a demo)

Imagine my dismay (etc etc). its TAB.

Both characters will crouch if either sneaks, but otherwise, if both characters are selected, only the active one performs their secondary skill on a right click. Try getting both the hero and DK to do a spin attack at the same time, or spin attack / spell.

I also found the voice of the thirsty prisoner really strange. I noticed it when I gave him the water that he had a robot voice.

Stephan Hawking is the man with the highest I.Q. in the world. Unfortunately for him, he is almost completely paralyzed. He communicates through this computer thing on his wheelchair, where he has a special keyboard (very sensitive) that he can use to type in text, and the computer reads the text out loud.
He's pretty famous, he wrote a couple of books about the universe.
