Well, I've practised a bit more with the combat, and I've decided I can cope with it enough to actually buy the game. I just need to use the pause key all the time.

I've discovered what the problem was, for me:

In Divine Divinity, I was used to holding down the control key and clicking ANYWHERE on the screen to attack the nearest enemy. I have verified that it works differently in Beyond Divinity: You have to be more careful where you click. If, while holding down the control key you click the opposite side of you from where your nearest enemy is, you walk to that spot rather than attacking the closest enemy.

I'll just have to unlearn some of the things I learnt while playing Divine Divinity.

As I said, the biggest thing is: I must use the pause key all the time (which is a little disappointing, since I find that overuse of the pause key tends to ruin the atmosphere, since it focusses you on the game interface rather than the unfolding storyline).

Anyway, I'm going to get the game when it comes out.

Strange! CTRL works 100% of time for me, wherever I click. I can scroll away from combat but if I press CTRL and click anywhere, my character will STILL attack the closest enemy. Also I have no trouble clicking on the enemy so I don't even use control. And I only used pause a couple of times...
Maybe it depends on the resolution, His_Divine_Shadow?

Yes, it does seem to me that it's not working as intended. It definitely does it every time when I click away from the enemy - my character walks to where I clicked. (I'm definitely holding down Ctrl properly - I have no problems in DivDiv, like I said).

I'm running at 1280 resolution, btw.

Ahh, 1024 res here.
Tried on 1024, His_Divine_Shadow?
I doubt it's the resolution, though.

BTW, I noticed the demo is not even version 1.0!

I'm definitely buying.

I thought the demo was okay. Now if they'll only make a few slight improvements before it goes gold (a Select All keyboard button comes to mind, as well as shared inventory & gold, and maybe a bit of special effects added to DK's voice), and it'll be fine.

Well, after even MORE testing, I'm getting better at not making it go wrong. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

It mostly seems to move instead of attacking if you are ALREADY attacking, but you continue to click while holding down the control key.

I've watched what my hands were doing, and it looks as if I'm clicking too many times because there's a short delay after the first click before it becomes apparent that my character is actually attacking.

What I mean is:

I hold down the control key and click. It takes a little while for my character to start an attacking move after that, so I impatiently click again. This is what makes my character move instead of attack. If I restrain myself and not click again, it seems to work much better.

I guess it's just a matter of getting used to it... But if they could make it so that it ignored further clicks when you when you're already attacking (if you still have ctrl held down) then it would really help mad clickers like me. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I have the demo but haven't felt like playing it yet.. Not big on demos... But I will buy the game of course, because the first one was great. Of course, if the reviews aren't great, well, that is another story.

Wooow! That is SMART! First you get the demo but you won't play it... Then you want to buy the SECOND game because the FIRST game was great... Say do you plan to organize a cult or something? If yes, you have a member!

I noticed that to; sometimes there is a short delay before the attack animations start, but your characters and enemy NPCs still attack. Maybe it is a timing issue? If the attack calculations are done before the move animation is complete, the game skips the first animation rather than delay the attack?

I must say that, having played some of , I much prefer the skill system of , though I must ask the developers a small question regarding their system:

It was mentioned that there are 300+ skills in the game, do these include the "damage," "accuracy," and other attributes, or are the secondary branches (such as one handed, with shield, etc) of the skill tree considered the actual skills?

I really enjoyed the demo, and I did not have any problems on 1024 X 640 resolution, though I am used to gameplay similar to Balder's Gate where pausing is required.

The only issue that I had was with the voice acting, and I see that it is possible to completely turn down the voice volume, thereby negating that issue.

I have no problems with the actual dialogue itself, it is just that the voices really did not seem to fit the characters, or the voice-acting was just horrible.

Would I buy this game? I am EXTREMELY tempted to! We will just have to see how much money I can save up, and I will have to learn more about the skill system (which, so far, looks like a highlight of this game) before fully committing.

Welcome!
Hmm, looks like the skills include the attributes: 300 is a big number...
The system sure is interesting, I never seen anything similar to this! I wonder if the full game has more icons...

Thank you for the welcome!

Though I must say, if you count the attributes for just the beginning melee skills of the demo, you have 75+ "skills" right off the bat...

I must say that my initial impressions of the skill system suggest that it is genius in a method beyond that of Diablo II's system: You can improve skills or invest in new ones, however, you can recycle skill points and you can customize attributes of your skills in the way that YOU want to!

I sincerely hope, however, that the developers have put enough skills in the game so that the 22 skill box limit (those 22 boxes at the top of the skill page) actually comes into play. I enjoy having to make customization decisions such as, "do I need this passive skill, or should I recycle it to make room for this one?" "Can I get away with one spell with all four elemental damages, or should I make four more potent versions of single elemental spells to save on mana?"

My only big complaint about the original game was that every character that you create, regardless of initial bearing, turned out nearly similar to every other character in terms of skills. In <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beyond.gif" alt="" /> I hope that pure-classes are just as viable as the mutli-class combinations (of course this is not a class based game; I am refering to Magic and Melee disciplines).
