You are perfectly right.
Although I don't see the learning curve only from a negative POV:
DD had basically Diablo's system, which everyone know but which was overused countless of times. BD has an all new, fully customizable system. Although I admit, I got confused at first, later I've seen it as a boon.
It's good that Larian made a leap forward by designing their own system.
The music was disspointing for me, but from the small 1 minute melody which was released on IGN's peek of the week, I know the music will be better.
I am not fond of the setting but the story starts with a climax, just like a comic book or a novel:
Will the hero escape?
What is the souldbinding for?
Where are the characters?
Whereas in DD you started as a generic hero with a vague intro movie, in a friendly village with healers and a lot of places to sleep.
Good comparison, though.
