Does anyone remember the deathknight from Divinity? The one in stormfist castle that killed the third marked one (can't remember his name). He had a voice like he had swallowed some glass. That's how I imagined a deathknight sounding.
So it's not so much that people want a cliche voice (that is, unless they're asking for a Darth Vader voice), they just want a scary one.
