My best bet would be your RAM giving you problems. You're experiencing these slowdowns because your computer is using your much slower hard-drive as virtual RAM. These days, you need a minimum of 256 mb RAM for most games, although 512 is strongly recommended. You can probably buy a 512 mb ram stick for about €75, and a 256 mb stick for about €40.
