The battlefields are intended to flee to if you need more XP or an extra lvl if you just can't make it past a certain point in the act... it really wouldn't be helpfull if you only got access to them near the end of an act...
Looking at the function the battlefields have, I doubt they would make it hard to find and activate them... we'll just have to wait and see...
