Hi I am having problems with the installation. The .rar file says that there is a compression error.

I have tried to decompress the file manually and it still says the file is corrupt.

Can anyone please put up this file for me to download:

anyone else having this problem?

Unfortunately, that is a 367MB file, so downloading could be a problem. A few people have had similar problems, mostly with one of the automap files, but at least one was with that same file.

Is there any physical damage to the CD? Do you have another optical drive you could try, or access to a different computer?

I to am having an issue with this file (CPackedb.1c) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />. I cannot copy the .rar to the hard drive due to a data error during the transfer. I am wondering if somebody has tried to compress this file (yes I do know the uncompressed file is 380+ Mb). The reason I am asking is that after installing the v1.34 pacth (a 10Mb download) I then had a 118 Mb version of the file. Even if it does not compress much would somebody be willing to transfer a full copy of the file to me? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/question.gif" alt="" /> I cannot take the disk back to the retailer due to my buying the game on Amazon.com and the retailer being in England while I am in the US. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

Did you try the CD in a different optical drive, if available, or even another computer? A different drive may be better able to handle the error.

Try the recovery function in the freeware program CDCheck (this site also has links to other data recovery programs and services). The more of the imagelists.rar file you can recover, the less would have to be transferred.
Corrupt sections of a recovered file could be identified by spliting the rar file (with Chainsaw) and checking CRC values (using something like FileCheck); after replacing damaged sections and/or the end of the file, the pieces could then be re-joined.

I have tried on 2 seperate systems (1 with DVD-rom & CD-R/W -- both with same results; other with a CD-R/W). In all instances getting a CRC error in the CPackedb.1c file. Using winzip or 7-zip I am able to retrieve all of the files in .rar except CPackedb.1c. This is the file that I was referring to not the entire .rar, sorry for my mix up there.

As you can see from above there are a total of 4 unreadable sectors on the disc, with another 45 sectors that are not totally readable. I then tried to remove the file CPackedb.1c. Still getting the error "CRC failed in 'static\imagelists\CPackedb.1c'. File is broken.

I then tried ISOBuster, recieved the error "Sector 101529 couldn't be read. Error: 03/11/05". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif" alt="" />

There was no mix up. WinRar may be able to repair the archive or recover individual files, but I think any other programs (at least freeware ones) would be limited to recovering the full rar file. You could try the trial version of WinRar (or the freeware command line unrar program) if you want, but I suspect too much of the file has problems reading for that.

CDCheck should have replaced any unreadable sections of the file with zeros, so you would end up with a 500MB file on your hard drive, the same size as the original.

Take the recovered 'imagelists.rar' file and run it through the physical file splitter Chainsaw, using a chunk size of 515KB. It would be convenient to create a new folder 'C:\dd\' and direct the output there, or move the chunks there afterwards.

This will produce 995 files, some of which contain the unreadable or mostly unreadable sections from the CD. These pieces can be identified by using FileCheck and a crc file (8KB) created from my imagelists.rar file. After running the program, switch to the Verify tab, then click the '...' button beside the text box, browse to where you extracted my crc file and open it. After clicking the 'Verify' button it will check your rar pieces against mine, and report any differences, which you can reply here with (only the file names are needed).
Assuming a reasonable number of errors, it should be easier to replace those pieces than the full CPackedb.1c file.

Note: FileCheck expects the files to be in the original locations to verify, so if you put the split file chunks in a location other 'c:\dd', open the CRC file in Wordpad (for example), and do a search-and-replace so the folder paths match your own.
If CDCheck renames the recovered file, rename it back to 'imagelists.rar' before splitting it into chunks.

Hopefully Filecheck just has a problem under W2K. Many of the errors list a CRC value of '00000000', which usually means Filecheck could not read the file. You could try opening a couple of these files in a hex editor (if you already have one) or even just Wordpad, to make sure they can be read ok.

Me too. I was hoping if CDCheck only reported 50 problem sectors (of more than 90k) they would be contained in just a few sections after the rar file was split.

I don't think your CRC file would provide much more information than the results list you posted. If Filecheck is having problems reading the first 99 files, your crc file would most likely contain the same 2 erroneous file sizes and lots of '00000000' CRC values.

To make sure Filecheck isn't part of the problem, lets try an MD5 checksum of the rar chunks, using either MD5summer (452KB) or DVDsig (10KB). Both are freeware single-file programs, with no install required.
You will need to download my MD5 checksum files (42KB).


Even if the problem really is in the entire first 99 chunks (knock on wood), that still drops the amount of data requiring transfer to a 6th of what the CPackedb.1c file would be compressed.

MD5summer stated that the checksum for imagelists.rar.chunk354 and imagelists.rar.chunk355 did not match.
It is also reporting that the files imagelists.rar.chunk1-99 do not exist.

Chainsaw's batch file for re-joining the pieces is rather inefficient for large numbers of pieces, so I've included a different batch file, which is much faster (though it does require more free hard drive space).

That would do it. Sorry, I didn't think to check what version of chainsaw I had, compared to the current one. The author must have changed the numbering format (a good thing, though the 'chunk' part could have been removed). Unfortunately support for Win 9x was also dropped. Yes, it worked. I am able to extract the complete file and DD i no longer crashing <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />. I am going to burn the fixed copy of the imagelists.rar to a CD for safe keeping <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Now I can play DD before BD like I was having to before <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />.

For all the hassle the file name differences caused (why would Filecheck list the right file size for most of them if it couldn't find the files? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" /> ), that was still easier than trying to transfer 300MB. Oh well, if anyone else runs into a similar problem with a corrupt or scratched CD, I have the procedure worked out.

When my CD-RW drive started having problems and I replaced it with a DVD-RW, I didn't want to organize a bunch of stuff to fill a DVD (system backup was a little over 2GB), so I zipped the DD folder (after moving saves and deleting the files in the dynamics folder) to add another 1.7GB. Now I can re-install DD by unzipping that file, and don't have to swap CDs or remember to re-install the patch.

Updated files and a streamlined version of the procedure is described below. I hope you didn't try following along with the convoluted method above.



[*] Use the recovery function in the freeware program CDCheck to copy the rar file to your hard drive (this site also has links to other data recovery programs and services). Any parts of the file it can not read it will replace with zeros, so you should end up with a 500MB file, the same size as the original.


[*] Take the recovered 'imagelists.rar' file and run it through the physical file splitter JR Split File, using a custom size of 526000 bytes. Leave the default split file name of 'imag'. This will produce 998 files (and a batch file to rejoin the pieces), some of which contain the unreadable or mostly unreadable sections from the CD. These pieces can be identified by verifying them against an MD5 checksum of a split, non-corrupt rar file.


[*] Download this file (29KB) and extract the contents into the same folder as the split files. The zip file contains an MD5 checksum file as well as the program DVDsig (homepage). Run the program and click on 'Verify' (click on 'Info' for help, if you wish).

Assuming a reasonable number of reported errors, it should be much easier to replace just those pieces than the full CPackedb.1c file. After replacing damaged sections of the rar file, the pieces can then be re-joined.


Once you have a working imagelists.rar file, you should back it up to CD-R, or if you have a DVD burner, you can zip the entire DD folder for an easy way to re-install the patched game (Some re-release versions of the game may already be updated to the latest 1.0034A version, as shown in the bottom right corner of the main menu, so would not need to be patched).

I also have this problem, did everything exactly as Raze said and now I need to replace JR split file imag.355 (what are the odds, the same file as Talithans

However, when I tried to download the 355 file that Raze attached, I realised its no longer available and so if anyone would be so kind to repost it again or send it to my mail jureblazanovic@hotmail.com , I would be most gratefull. I deleted the temporary files I uploaded before because I was going to update the procedure to avoid having to manually split/rejoin the rar file, and to eliminate the need to ask for specific chunks. I never got around to that, but it is just as well, since I think I have found a better solution, which may (haven't had a chance to check out the program) eliminate the need to get the file off the CD before being able generate a repaired version.

Hi, I was planning to restart with this game, so I borrowed it from a friend, but, winrar won't compress sound and...(well I forgot the other), so when I play I have no background sound, could you plz send me the sound file?

the weird thing is: the previous time I played this game, everything went perfect, maybe because I had winzip back then?

It is possible that the CD may have been scratched or otherwise damaged since the last time you installed the game. Also, if you used a different computer, or just a different optical drive, then some drives are better able to handle errors.

Anyway, A couple months ago someone else had a problem with the sound.rar and wizf.rar files. I never got around to deleting the recovery files from my webspace, so you can use them as well.

This is a slightly edited version of a procedure in the problem when installed topic.


[*] Download the file verification and repair program ICE ECC (homepage): program with install (695KB) or just
zipped (624KB).

[*] Download the following zipped ecc file (507KB) and extract it to a folder on your hard drive (such as 'c:\temp').

[*] Make sure the play CD is free from dust or fingerprints, and insert it into an optical drive.

[*] After installing the ICE ECC program (or extracting the zip file to an appropriate folder), start it. Under the toolbar, the top pane will list all available drives. Browse to where you extracted the ecc file (ie double click on the local disk 'c:' then the folder 'temp') and double click the ecc file (or select it and click on the 'Verify' toolbar button).

[*] In the window that pops up, browse to the folder containing the damaged rar files and click 'OK'. In this case, in the left pane of this window you would click on the plus sign next to your optical drive's drive letter, click on the 'disc3' folder to select it and then click the OK button.


[*] Right after you click OK, the window will be refreshed and the title bar changed, this time asking for a folder to place the recovered file. Browse to a folder on your hard drive (perhaps the folder you extracted the ecc file to) where you have more than 251MB free space (or 138MB for just the sound.rar file), select it in the left pane and click OK.

The program will then read the files off the CD, listing blocks (sections of the file) that it can not read. If the damage in the sound.rar and wizf.rar files are limited to relatively small sections, the program can repair the file right away, saving a good version where you previously indicated.
If there is additional damage, the program will list the error 'Not Enough Recovery Blocks' (with a yellow background colour) in the bottom message pane, followed by the fraction of the available recovery blocks (3 at this point) to the total number required. Given the number of blocks you need, you can download one or more of the following files and extract them into the same folder as the first ecc file.

6 blocks (908KB), 11 blocks (1.52MB)

These recovery files can be used to repair up to 1% damage in the 2 rar files, which should be more than enough (let me know if it isn't).

[*] Next redo the verify, by right clicking on the failed 'Verify' task in the middle pane of the program window, and selecting 'Reset task' (or repeat the procedure as above).


This should produce two valid rar files (or one if you don't have a problem with wizf.rar), which you can use to replace corrupt file(s) reported during the install, or to do a manual install.
