It could work, and it could be a nice experience too. One of you moves around and fights, while the other uses potions and casts spells. As long as your partner isn't an idiot...
Think of Battlefield 1942 for instance. You had vehicles and aircraft that could be manned by more than 1 guy. Sure, the second guy wouldn't be able to drive or fly, but he did get a machinegun or some other weapon.
I guess it would be the same thing, only now you would have to talk about what you're gonna do, or it wouldn't work.
