Copy protection is a must for all software, game software(not console)
is actually pretty light on the copy protection compared to most software.
Example Emulator X by EMU has a protection where you must leave the cd in drive while using the program so it shows you have the legit cd for the program.
Pirating software is still a big problem in a lot of countries(just check the latest gaming developers guides to read all about the problems it causes)
so Protecting a game is a must. No matter what problems are caused the copyright work to ensure the protection of the developers hard work from nastey pirates that would warez the game...(you can't imagine all the legal jumbo that courts have on games and ownership and much much more)really is a must^_*
