Open letter to developpers and editors:
I am sorry to hear about your problems to deploy a patch.
It seems to become a pretty standard song nowadays: a fantastic game is ready,
a normally good QA testing has been done, and here comes the copy protection guys. The game is released, and many problems appear that were not there before the "protection" was added.
Amongst those:
- Slower game
- Frequent CD access (ex: Morrowind)
- Many drives failing to read the CD/DVD
- Game faling to even start
- Frequent crashes
- Requesting latest graphics drivers, but it does not seem to really help.
- etc.
I am sooooo pissed off at this. Games programmers do a superb job, and bang! The Dark Side Guys add a protection that ruins it for a whole lot of players.
I am buying up to 20 games a year, and I have several computers, that I installed myself from scratch, with latest drivers and everything. In the last years, I have had problems with at least 50% of those games. And I am not the only one! Everytime, I was looking desperately to forums for a solution, only to find out that *many* people have the same problem!

Ubisoft is now high on my black list (Most of their games cannot be read by many brand of drives!), but is not alone. We can add THQ, and, it seems, Focus is starting on the same path.
Dear Editors, do you think it is normal that players pay 50 EUR for a game that cannot even play on their standard PC??? This is not an occasional problem! Just check on forums for virtually all latest great games (esp. UBISOFT games), and you will see!

And do you know who is penalized by this?
Not the pirate, no no no no. A pirate will find a crack pretty fast.
But the honest players, the fans, who bought the game with their money, and cannot run the game without using a NOCD crack or a 400 Mb patch?
And what about the right to do a backup copy (for personal use), in case of CD getting scratched?
And what about the games programmers who cannot even release a corrective patch easily because of the copy protection?
And what about their reputation? Is it not unfair that they get blamed for the problems added by the "protection"?
And what about YOU, mister the Editors? I can tell you that the reputation of UBISOFT is going way down in the heart of the players. You do not believe me? Just read your own forums!

Bugs happens in any program, this is pretty inevitable. That's why we do QA, that's why we have patches. On this forum, there was a very nice interaction between Larian and the players community. Larian programmers were using our remarks to get the game better. ANd what do we read now? Latest minute problem due to copy protection! ARGH!
You think the copy protection will increase sales?
NO WAY! To be honest, I am a fan, but I think I will first borrow the CD to a friend and test it before buying a copy myself. Do not want to be ripped off again.
And, while they go to the effort of re-recording the English voices, I learn from Focus (the editor) that they will not have French voices because of the translation cost. The previous game had French and Dutch, and this one will only have translated text??? Disappointing. Again, it seems to be a decision from the Editor, which is going to damage the reputation of Larian unfairly.
PLEAAASE! I BEG YOU: STOP PUTTING PROTECTIONS THAT HARM THE HONEST PLAYERS!
Yours,
Philippe Jacob (a disappointed and angry game buyer)
