I have not played Baldurs Gate, but there are discussions of various games in the
RPG Chat forum that might give you a better idea of how they compare.
There is a demo for Divinity (at
Fileplanet.com and probably other places), though it is a bit large at 400MB. The beginning of the game (what the demo covers) is a little heavy on the hack-and-slash, but it would give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. The full game has more elaborate quests, but the demo has the same style and sense of humour.
