Nic Balthazar (this name should ring a bell among the Flemish people) has written a book about a boy who suffers from autism. Sadly but true, based on a true story... Nobody in his environment understands the boy and he feels unwelcome in this world. What's worse: his handicap or being pestered because of his handicap? The boy locks himself up, and the only way out is his computer with videogames and his music. And one day, he has a plan...
'Niets' (that's how the book and the performance is called) is a theatre-and-multimedia-project for young people (+ 14 years) and is based on the book of Nic Balthazar: 'NIETS' (=nothing) was everything what he said. The book forms the base for a theatre-solo production and contains multimedia, computers, and video-games: <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> and music (Praha Khan). All this in contrast with a poetic theatre text that is mainly pronounced in rhyme. Ben, the main character, suffers from autism and is very language-sensitive. He does not speak like you or me, but he raps and rhymes his ideas into each other.
The story goes deep and is sometimes even funny. It takes place in the virtual world of chatboxes, porn sites, and videogames. But as well in the hard reality of teasing, autism and a little bit of "being in love".
