Try deleting all of the files in the '
..\Divine Divinity\Run\Dynamic' folder.
This folder is used as a cache for the game. Files are created / copied there from the save game folder when you load, and written / copied from that folder when you save a game. The files will be re-created as required the next time you start Divinity. If there was a corrupt file in that folder, deleting the files should fix the problem.
If you reset the configuration at least once after installing the patch when the game started after a crash, the dynamics folder should already have been cleared, so this would not be the problem.
Do any recent saves work properly?
Make a copy of your latest save (or save under a new name) then delete the world.x2 file from the save game folder. Reload that save and see if you can enter the Dark Forest (optionally you can copy the world.x2 file from your most recent working save into the new save folder). You may have run into a problem that a few people have hit with crashes entering Verdistis. If this is the case, deleting the world.x2 file will force the game to use the default version of that file, fixing the crash problem, but removing any items left directly on the ground and re-sealing quest opened locations (workarounds for both are described in the topics below);
