It depends on the relative positions of the characters where the hit points get displayed. Sometimes they are obscured, but usually not (that I noticed, anyway). I tended to pay more attention to the main HP bar than the individual hits, though. Zooming in on the fights should give you a much clearer view.
There was a listing in the hotkey options which I think would remove the display, but I didn't test it so it could have been for something else. Right clicking on the portraits brings up the character menu; I don't think I ever right clicked on any other part of the display.
A few people didn't like some of the voices, the DK's in particular. The Larians also added a few hotkeys for screen focus/movement and character selection that people requested, and fixed a couple bugs that cropped up in the German version.
