The thirsty prisoner keeps begging me for water, and despite that fact I have bottles of it, cups of it, and even a bucket of water, I can't give it to him. I read that it's in the kitchen, but I drank that myself in a 'let's see if this messes with my stats' drinking binge (I chucked up!). Please tell me it's NOT keyed to just a single special bottle. Alternatively is there another way of getting that skill book from him. Pickpocket level 3 doesn't seem to work.

Thanks

I just grabbed random water from the kitchen, one bottle, one cup, etc. And when I returned there was a menu option to give the prisoner water. I highly doubt there was a specific cup required and I got lucky enough to pick it up! Grab a few more and try again

Nope I totally drank the kitchen dry. I was encumbered and had just fought a group of guys so I figured what the heck, maybe this will do something. I drank everything, beer, ale, and water....and then threw up. I only get two options, I will find water and Find your own water. I got more water in the battle fields but I don't get the 3rd option.

Thats not good... I can't think of anything else I did differently. This is a wild guess, but do you have your main character selected and not your DK when talking to him? I have no idea if that matters, but I do recall the DK being an [nocando] about getting him water or something

Good luck, maybe someone else here has a brilliant idea.

I think it does have to be that one specific bottle of water from the kitchen, alas. I had also drunk that water when I got to the prisoner, and when I found that he refused all the nice mugs of water I had, I reloaded an earlier save (thanks Larian for the 5 quick save slots! Way to go! ) and went back and got that specific bottle. That worked.

Yeah, quests shouldn't be designed that way; if you need one particular thing, it should have a special name ("Extra Wet Water" or whatever). Better, it should accept any water. So I guess this is a to balance that .

Yes it needs to be a specific bottle, dont ask me why smirk

Just pick up every "Bottle of water" in the kitchen on that same level.

With version 1.4 this is how this quest worked for me:

When talking to the thirsty guy no quest as such appeared in the quest log.. he just said he was thirsty and I agreed to find some water.

Then, when picking up the bottle of water that is on the table in the middle of the kitchen, suddenly my quest-log flashed and was updated with the quest. After that happened I was able to give the water to the guy.

So to sum it up: It's the bottle of water on the table in the middle of the kitchen.. and for some reason I only got the quest when picking it up *after* talking to the guy. It might also work if you already picked it up though.

it does work the other way round with 1.4 => I was to lazy to walk twice. I had the water first and then went to the prisoner.
