What's the difference between the difficulty levels?

Is there any significance to the level names "Action" and "Tactical"? Action would seem to imply a real-time type gameplay, with Tactical being more turn-based. Or are they just four levels of increasing difficulty with no differences in gameplay style?

i think its very easy(action) mediam(tatical) and so on im not exactly sure of the changes, maybe you just got to get to act 2 or three on both to find out

They seem to be fancy ways of saying easy, medium, hard, and Extrahard. You also have less starting skill points as you get harder. Damn confusing IMO. they should have just kept the normal names.

On easy you start with 2 skill points, on action you get 1, for tactical / hardcore you get 0. Edited slightly from the readme file (tactical mode was called strategic);

Quote
GAME MODE

- When you start a new game, you will be asked what game mode you would prefer:

* Very easy: a straight-forward, fast-paced action RPG that doesn't bother you with combat too much.
* Action: a straight-forward, fast-paced action RPG that is still challenging.
* Tactical: an RPG with the emphasis on calculated, strategic combat.
* Hardcore: an RPG that offers impossible combat settings.

These modes do not change the story, they only affect the difficulty setting of combat.

I wonder if it is possible to beat the game on the Hardcore level.

Thanks, Raze. I know the this info is probably in the manual, but I haven't bothered to open my box just yet.

From the looks of it Tactical is the only way to play the game, from me at least.

Starting skill points and combat ease are the *only* thing these difficulty levels affect? What about skill points per level? What about the amount of experience per monster killed or quest performed? I'm tempted to use one of the easier modes because I want to emulate the combat of Divine Divinity as much as possible (I hate having to pause during combat), but at the same time I want to have a "normal" gaming experience as I usually choose normal difficulty when I play games the first time. In most games, the difficulty mode isn't a difference between action and strategy so I'm a bit confused over what to pick and still feel like I'm not cheating myself out of something (like choosing easy mode usually does in most other games.)

Yes, combat and starting skill points are the only differences between difficulty settings.

Has anybody tested the levels to see the difference in hit points for a given creature? I'm restarting with the 1.41 patch, and not sure whether to stick with Tactical or go for Action so as to get the higher number of skill points. Thing is, I don't want opponents who die if I wave at 'em.

fable -> Don't use the 1.41 patch, it's bugged. The new 1.42 patch isn't (as far as I know). Download that instead. I HIGHLY recommend you do.

Yes, I just have; thanks. Question remains, though.

Just started on Hardcore, and it's not so tough. I guess the advance knowledge and familiarity of how to fight makes it easier. I uses a couple of fire blast to soften them up before melee with both. I always use the poison skill for melee as it make a big difference at the start.

I am getting 2 skill point per levelup for the DK...but not the hero. probably a bug.
