I've also noticed that a pair of quests on the Act I battlefield merely resulted in the merchants agreeing I did well--no experience bonus, no removal of the quest from my log. If I dropped the items they'd asked for, my quest log "pin" appeared alongside the quests, again. If I spoke with them, they would again ask about the quest items.
