I am only a level 7 mage, I think, but so far my ability to kill creatures with magic is terrible compared to my ability to kill with a weapon, even though my intelligence stat(25) is a lot higher than my strength or agility (3 or 4). It drains my mana completely to kill only a couple of low level creatures. Has anyone else had an experience like this, and if so, should I just give up on magic and boost my other stats.
Wouldn't it be better to pay doctors when we are healthy?

Are you mixing elemental damage for your spells? That increases the mana requirements a fair bit. Check your trophy list for the monster's resistances, to make sure you are not wasting mana on spells that don't hurt them much. I'm not playing a mage, so that's all the advise I can think of.

Elemental spells are very underpowered. A level 3 fire spell does 19-42 damage but costs 65 mana. My level 8 mage has 19 Intelligence so 365 mana. He gets off max of 5 spells totalling 210 damage max before sucking up yet another mana potion. And this doesn't even take into account enemy resistance. Frustrating. I'm about ready to start over with a different class. I remember in Divine Divinity being able to kill enemies in one or two hits with meteor strike or lightning...what happened?

I got my lightning spell at like level 11 I think, so your pretty close to it. I think its at beginning of Act II. Shortly thereafter you get 4 nature spells which are pretty badass. You just gotta stick with it longer, mages always suck in the beginning, thats how it is in every game, and they are always stronger then all other classes at endgame.

Thanks for the info, Chroniss
My experience is that mages start out weak in party based RPG's, but since this is just me and the DK (warrior, another bad choice since he can't be equipped with good armor), I figured the spells would be much more effective. I'm gonna restart and reverse the characters, me as fighter and DK as mage, that way he'll have the natural armor and we'll see how he does with those nature spells.

Well I haven't played it yet. But I am not getting a standard mage. I'll mix it with some survivor skills. I read somewhere that the enemies use the same magic spells in the game as you can get. So maybe you should invest in the harder skills. Remember if you get killed by a mage in the game just think you could have that skill that killed you.
It's not like diablo where the first magic spell you find level it up and can use till the end of the game. In you only got the firespell and the lightning spell that were good enough to go throug the intire game shure theire wher better spells but you could get by with just those 2 spells. Seems that in the beginner spell are weak spells so you have to use stronger spells.
Not in the mood for cheese? That excuse has more holes than a slice this fine Gorgombert!

What are the "stronger spells" and wouldn't they just use more mana? The problem I'm seeing is the damage vs mana ratio is out of whack.

If you happen to find someone teaching you the Hammer skill, take it. It's one of the most powerful skills in the game. It can kill almost anything and if it doesn't it will stun them for a while so that you can happily chop them to pieces while they are standing there. It works great on groups of enemies too.
If everything else fails, hammer them.

There really aren't enough skill points to split around. If you start splitting, by the time you reach high levels those will be wasted skills. In reality you sorta have to choice a couple spells or skills and pump everything into them. In other words, this new skill/spell system is utterly retarded.

My main character is a mage/archer. I am at the end of act I, with level 12 characters. I use a bow when I run out of mana, otherwise a very powerful level 4 fire ray spreading in a 30% aperture. Damage between 50 and 130 (more or less) for each target touched.
The advantage of mage is when they are getting multiple targets spells, while a warrior can only target one ennemy at a time.

I thought mages were weak in the beginning of the game, but im halfway through act II and my mage is better than my warrior (i made death knight a warrior), secret is to use curses then your elemental spells, o and nothing beats the shaman weather magic-lightning all round

IMO, it is lame to have so many skill points that you can learn most of the skills in the game.

Well you have to remember that is a different game. I too looked at the different skill system and said "WTF!!" but you get used to it. I just got the game saturday, played it once, forgot to patch so I haven't played v1.32 yet. Its a learning curve. You can either face the challenge or whine endlessly about how 'this isn't DD! WAAAAH!' What the hell do you want? 5 points in every skill at level 10? You could virtually do that with DD. (Skillbooks) Fun for a while but then no challenge. I'll have to find out more myself on the game but I think the attitude needs to change on your part. The glass is half full man.....

Divinity was really fun from the first moment I entered the game. I'm simply stating fun factor of the game. Fanboy onwards.
