Act 3 => if you are lucky and find "the portal of Rixx" book, I'm currently searching for this needle in a haystack => you get another clue for a quest there. No, not necessary either - but books help to put odds and ends together.
Act 4 => I advise strongly to faithfully read then. It's an Academy after all <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> - up to then, you should be able to read Raanaar, otherwise you're in trouble to understand this act.
