The gargoyles only come when you don't follow the hint from the book... if you pull the levers in the right order you should not awake them... and open the treasure room...
If you are standing near the door, the gargoyle can't come in the room, hence is not visible... but is close enough to attack...try moving further from the door.
I haven't seen this problem when I applied the patch, a reload maybe?
