There i am minding my own business exploring the imp village and then i'm suddenly talking to the necromancer who wants some crystals..errr...?

i thought act 2 was going to be about doing favours for the imps, seems like it might just be finding things for the necromancer?

(i didnt even bother to investigate the imp alchemists house because i thought i'd explore area first, do specific quest type things later..)

There are 3 tasks for the necromancer, the first being the longest. There are more quests in the imp village. It is a good idea to explore the village fully before leaving, though there is no need to skip the alchemist's house.

I got the same quest, right after talking to the Imp Chief. It's certainly abrupt, but hey, good loot is good loot, and it's a really easy quest.

They really wiped out <span class='standouttext'>Spoiler : </span><span class='spoiler'>Aleroth?!</span> That was a surprise.

When you've finished each of the necromancer's tasks, you'll be put back right where he snatched you from, so don't worry. Just a little detour.

I thought this was a pretty cool piece of Act 2 -- always good when a game can surprise you like that! And each task is a neat little story on its own.

will i still be in act 2 when he returns me, or should i do the battlefields before i collect the final crystal?

You will still be in act 2 when you return from the last necromancer task. In fact, very near the end a certain imp ask you if you are ready to go or if you need more time.
