The inn is fine, but you remember right about putting off the castle for awhile. The area around Aleroth (excluding the troll cave), then the farmlands, then to the north east of Rivertown would probably be the easiest. North west (around the cursed abbey) is relatively easy with a bow, but tougher melee. Basically, if you hit an area that is too hard, try a different direction.
