Yes, yes that chest behind a pillar of steam has the first Battlefield Key. There is a copy of it later, but getting in there early is helpful (especially if you're playing above Action difficulty.)
The key is in left room in the Arena in a haystack. Just carry the chest with you until you get there, drop it, and open it. Viola, instant battlefields goodness. Also, if you want some cheap skills I would refrain from solving the Edmond quest until you return from the Battlefields. He'll teach you two basic Wizard skills for 50G a piece. VERY nice.
