I went to the battleground to buy it, and sure it was sold to me. But I don't have it shown as an option I can learn.

Do I need to get sharpen initially from the guy past the deathknights, and the battleground purchase only allows me to raise it to a higher level once I get it initially?

Serious rip-off IMO to sell me a skill for a lot of cash (at that point of the game) with no hint in the manual or conversation path that it can't be used - or did I miss something? I like a lot of the changes to the skill system from DD but I can't say that it is always clear and intuitive <sigh>.

Hi, Ariana <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />
no, buying a skill from a BF trader should work the same way as buying a skill from a trainer in the game. But in former versions not all skills worked from BF traders. I fear, you've got one of them. If you buy it in the weaponry in Act 1 => should work. Can you reload?

I understood you correctly, it does not show up in the tree Warrior - craftmanship - sharpen weapon? Please, try this => click on the skill tree button at the bottom of the table and then look at warrior - craftmanship - sharpen => is it silver or red?

Thank for quick reply.

I had enabled all skills and the sharpen skill was in the correct place - but colored to show it was unavailable even after I bought it. With the screen set to only show skills I could use all I saw was identify under the craftsmanship tree.

I reset twice with the same result.

I do have 1.42 and in my last game sharpen worked perfectly - but I may have gotten it from the dungeon seller not the battleground seller that game. Also dungeon 2 was unpopulated which I had thought was an older bug that was fixed.

Maybe I'll save and reinstall the patch and see if that makes any difference.

The workaround is to be taught it "in game" instead of in the battlefields; you've wasted your cash, which is obnoxious. A guard in the citadel training field will teach it to you for dirt cheap; go talk to him, and you can be sharpening yourself some killer weapons.

In the mean time, pickpocket your would-be teacher and get at least something back for your troubles... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

You will rue the day you opposed me! Begin your rueing! I'll just... sit over here... and watch.

Thanks - I wasn't out the cash since I went to a prior save when the skill didn't appear. I also was only a few deathknight fights away from the cheaper trainer so it was no big deal - I just was curious what the problem was. (I was spending more than I needed so I could save on potion usage - my first game I had to suck down a potion or two per fight to beat the DK patrols but with sharpen that shouldn't be required - the skill is quite useful).

It may or may not be coincidence but I reinstalled the patch and went back to the merchant - all worked as it should. Also the inventory works better - as the patch notes say - so I think my problem was the patch not taking the first time. I had installed the patch directly from on-line. This time I saved it to disk and installed from there. Maybe it made a difference <shrugs> maybe not but I'm convinced the problem was related to a bad patch install.

I just put one point into sharpen but when I try to sharpen my 2-handed sword, the sharpen option is grayed out.
Any idea why?

Actually, I was having the same problem. For me, though, if you click on the guy who actually has the sharpen skill first, then try to sharpen, it works. You have to select the actual character who can sharpen.

If you're having a problem using the skill, try having a merchant repair the item, even if it isn't damaged. Works for me every time.

THanks guys for the fast replies!
It worked.
What level is good to get sharpening to? 3 or so?

sharpening adds an agility requirement to a weapon
level 1 +6
level 2 +13
level 3 +21
....

so the formula seems to be
previous level requirement + new level + 5

It could be that this is wrong and only works with the stepped use of sharpening (did it in steps, first lvl 1, then 2, then 3, etc whenever my chars had the required agility)

And your question about a good level of sharpening.
To the point where you can still use the weapon due to the added requirement.

Just curious how you did that? If you try to have a merchant repair an item that does not need repair you will just get a window that says "This weapon does not need repair". You cannot repair a fully repaired weapon.

Never said the item actually repairs. For some reason, going through that process and seeing the "This item doesn't need repairs" message, however, causes the sharpen skill to reactivate for me when it's greyed-out but shouldn't be.

Various things reactivate the skill. Just switching screens a few times usually does it also for me.
