So the answer is that the new version of sharpen speeds your leaving the game. Instead of needing to go to the main menu and hit "quit" you can save time by just sharpening a weapon.
Edit - At least one person indicated that the crash to desktop may occur from old saves - I'm starting a new 1.43 game to see if I have any luck sharpening.
Yep - not at all to my surprise (but I like to see for myself) I crashed to desktop sharpening a shortsword. I had a magic hammer drop and that I had been able to sharpen with no crash.
