After loading 1.44 and continuing with my original game, I found that Sharpen worked on a "plain" sword with no additional stats, but any sword with extra qualities caused a CTD. Fortunately I found a plain Ranaar two-hander that sharpened to 153-254 damage, and that (plus about a million life potions:) was enough to get me to the end of the game.
