Hmmmmm, that just sucks! So I take it there is no way to open those doors except by letting Laurel live. I believe the next time I play, my warrior won't develop an inchy sword arm in the Citadel.
You can always wear the citadel armour disguise until you get to the end, so you can do all the quests, then remove the armour and work your way back to the start.
As Raze says - if you want to spend the time the ideal is to do every quest and wait until you are ready to head to Chapter 2. Then return to the starting areas, give the book to the merchant for the last quest xp, then switch armor and thoroughly clear out the dungeon. By this point that isn't all that hard to do.
Reality is for those who cannot cope with fantasy. Fortunately, I can cope quite well.
