Winterfox:
No. Troika is a professional group of people. Professional group of people are expected to meet a deadline and, in the case of game developers, release something that at least doesn't seem like a bug-ridden alpha version. Troika failed to do that. They failed their responsibility. Which is just too bad.
Yes, I agree with the first part. However, Atari forced them to release the game one month before the deadline. That's what I am trying to say. And still no 2nd patch.
Obsidian is quite promising, considering their resume. (Well, not IWD2, but.) In any case, believe me, KotOR's quite worth it. It easily ranks right behind PS:T in my books, and is the one shining star in the last three-four years of mediocre to downright ghastly CRPGs.
Honestly, I can't see what's wrong with IWD2: It's a well made game, with a storyline and wtih more quests and less mindless H&S than IWD1. Nevertheless, I just couldn't be interested in this game's story. Maybe it lacked character?
I do not know. Maybe if I played Planescape: Torment now, I would've liked it...
I also heard many good reviews of KotOR but my computer wouldn't run this game.
I am currently playing Vampire: The Masquerade: Redemption. For some reasons, I tend to like games which got low reviews: Arcanum and now VTM.
Nevertheless I am quite enjoying this one, it has great graphics (better than NWN IMHO), interesting combat and engaging storyline. In fact, even if you often don't have dialogue choices, when you do, the choice you take is important, for example:
When I fought a setite priestess, I the had her heart and the choices were:
"I shall stake this wicked heart and destroy her" or
"I shall drain this heart to gain the priestess' powers".
I took the later one. It lowered my Humanity raiting by 20 but I got a whole new spell school, which was quite useful. It's the only game I played so far where being evil doesn't complicate the game: in the middle ages, you can buy weapons and armours "of the Unholly": usable only by evil.
