Wow. Having gone the sword route a number of times I have to admit how surprised I was by mace fighting. That damage bonus from the mace skill is hefty, and I may be imagining things but I swear it looks like its modifying the total damage not just the mace damage. So strength bonus gets a boost as well. I'm not certain about this, but my damage seemed a bit excessive at the stage of the game I'm talking about.
I was 9th level using the Bat of Striking (33-38 DMG) with a 60% boost from Mace 2. I also had augment damage 2. My strength was 33 or so (give or take a point from items). I was doing damage in the high 70's - low 80's constantly.
Orc drummers? No problem. Skeleton Conjuror Lord? Didn't take a scratch. Giant spider? Didn't stand a chance. It almost felt like cheating.
Which brings me to my three questions...
Is mace expertise working as intended?
Is the mace's inherent [nocando] kicking factor balanced by the rarity of maces in the game?
Aside from my aforementioned bat and a morningstar, I've yet to see any impressive maces. Are there any really powerful maces in the high level game?
Thanks.
Moo.

I think i have seen maces do 75 min to 120 max damage in the game. A bit similar to axes, swords are maybe less powerful, but investing in the relevent expertise makes a difference.
I have never tried a mace, althougth i do feel like cheating too becuase ive got scorpions and they are really powerful.

I haven't looked to see if the mace expertise is modifying anything other than dmg, but i also use maces and they are far better than the sword class, although as you mentioned, there aren't many impressive maces i have found so far. i still have my bat of striking with 2 to mana drain and 2 to fire dmg and yes, i am almost always over 80 for dmg. thing is, i have no way of knowing how good or bad that is..i have found some formidable weapons, but they never do as well as my bat with the very low recuperation time and relatively good dmg. it's nice that i have found an effective niche for my one hand/shield (which, btw- the shield is the reason i chose mace, that and the +90% dmg addition) combo, but what if i don't find anything else that's mace class and neat?

Thanks for all the replies. Its good to hear there are some maces with high base damage. Its just scary to be able to inflict damage as quickly with a mace and shield as with a giant sword.

I am going for the hammer next time, dont see many of them about,i saw this mace called morning star, did 55-97 damage and had 3 charm places avaiable!!
Maybe i was wrong about the above mace stats but i have seen swords do max 105 and axes the same so i expect maces to come within that range.
I think hammers are 90 max,halbaerds 98 max
Of course the better unique mace might just do 120 damage.

Here's a quick hammer question for you, tragic...
Does the hammer's deathblow chance stack with the death blow skill (making it 10% total) or does it make two seperate 5% rolls? I'm guessing the latter since the hammer Deathblow doesn't seem to be affected by spirit resistance.

Fire- i dont know i havent used a hammer i was just commenting on the damage done by all the types of weapons and my urge to try a weapon which i rarely find.
I dont see why it shouldnt stack however,i mean if at one hit you get your deathblow 5 and at that particular hit you get you 5% chance to deathblow then it should add up to 10%

"Lets kill some orc". (Lord of the Rings) It's "Let's hunt some orc" sorry And on topic: I always played as a warrior with swords. But now I restarted the game and I wonder what was the best weapon besides swords... I now have a very good mace or hammer, don't remember which one. It's spiky I didn't put any skill points in weapon expertise yet. I'm still deciding. I do have augment damage, augment defense and stun. I have a great bow as well and a great hammer, and a good axe. So don't know which one to pick. And I was also wondering how the traps work? I have 1 skillpoint in deadly gift. Does that work for all traps (scorpions, bomb,...)?

Select Deadly Gift as your right click function, and a menu bar will pop up with icons for all of the trap types you have in your inventory. Left click on the type you wish to use. Right click somewhere on screen to release a trap.

I finally found a better mace class weapon. it's a well made morningstar of the succubi with 5 to mana drain and 5 to fire dmg. with my other dmg pads, i'm rolling 120 dmg consistently. Nice to blow through ilona's dungeon seeing as it's such a long level without being able to make the treasure drops sans the teleporter stone. I really enjoy the mana drain thing. being a warrior it means i can beat things and not really have to worry about running out of mana from casting shields, heal, or some offensive spell like freeze. it was spendy,(almost 43K) but i made that back pretty quick so who cares? maybe one fine day i'll find something even better.

i love a one handed mace! I noticed no one here commented on the MACE of CHAOS. About 70 something low end high 100 to 105. Lots of extra goodies ( stats ) attached. once it had charm level added. It even had recovery speed of 10. I got it twice from the elven merchant in flu nimble. For reasons best left alone I had to restart my game 3 times from scratch. that's why i know about this mace. respectfully Syrholmes

Mace of Chaos -- dark forest, flu nimble ( the village ), The person selling bows -- the boratus quest makes him a great friend. Side note sells great armor but at a VERY hefty price. You may not be able to afford it! Problem? I can't get him to sell it as it's not comming up in his inventory this time around. respectfully Syrholmes

Where did you find this one handed mace (dmg 120) That 120 was with modifiers ( Augment Damage, Strength, Mace Expertise, etc.) so it won't read as doing 120 damage.

It's not coming up in his inventory with me either. And his armour is very pricy indeed. I now bought an axe with 64-114 dmg (no augment damage etc incl). One disadvantage: no shield and i had a great magic shield
