he's at number 1 in Hellfighter's map. And his home will remain empty until you have the quest from the Chieftain's son to "find the alchemist".

2. Are you at the right spot?
3. Look on your minimap... do you see a green spot in unreachable area? <shudder>

The pit in the SE area is only open after you received the alchemist's quest to "find a cure for the plague".
