Go out into the corridor near the entrance to mage Markunthar. Drop all ingredients on the floor and then pick them up one by one => by clicking, not drag&drop and let your char do this.
Turn around and walk into his fore room => do XP flutter up? If so, TALK to instructor first and then follow his instructions.
