Yeah well I had that problem too.
I tried it a couple of times and it seems to happen when you block his normal way (to the left if I remember correctly). The imp just keeps wandering around and you're stuck...
I left the game like this for about half an hour while I was grocery shopping so it really stops there. You'll have to revert to a previous save I'm afraid...
