GetRight was ad-supported a couple of years ago but was one of the first download managers to get rid of adware and contains no spyware (check Headlight's
statement here). I have used it for a couple of years with a firewall (Outpost) and have had no unexplained network connection attempts.
I have to say that I find it strange that Larian would continue with any copy protection if it had such an adverse effect on patch sizes. This would carry a real (and substantial) cost in extra bandwidth - and all for no real purpose. I am waiting for a patch to remove the CD-Check before I would consider purchasing Beyond Divinity (I will not run a game which requires a CD present every time) so those who delay or avoid purchasing due to this copy protection are a further cost.
