Well it's that time of the year again that your subscription to your virus scanner runs out. Question is do I stay with Norton or do I step over to McAfee? And more important Why?

i choosed for norton because that was the software i got for free with my creative audigy2 soundcard.
and i use norton firewall also.

and i found a neat trick to get my virus updates even after the subcription is expired

I didn't vote. Here is my input. If you read reviews neither is truly superior. I like McAfee's interface better and it runs fewer apps on startup -- less of a memory hog. The amount of stuff Norton runs in the background is huge. However, I have had trouble with McAfee. I don't know if they have fixed the problems, but when I switched to a cable modem, it took weeks to find out why my laptop couldn't connect and it turned out to be from the McAfee software. I fixed that problem, but other issues have arisen. I don't switch because I am used to it, but one of these days I probably will, or maybe I will just upgrade.

would it have to do with changing the system date and time?

I choose AVG cuz it's free....

I would choose none of these two.

I have chosen Kaspersky Antivirus, mostly because of frequency of updates. None other antivirus makes them more often.

New viruses are being invented every day, every hour even, what use of antivirus that makes updates four times a month?

@Jurak was right. just put your system clock 2years back. (in the right below corner of your desktop.
do an "update" and put your system time back the way it was.:D

Another way i found, is even easier, and you don't have to manualy switch your systemclock.

before installing norton (make sure it's the first time or that everyting is deleted )put your systemclock to pff.. something like 2010 or soo.
install the software.
don't do any automatic updates.
reboot.
change the system clock back to normal.
and now you can update freely until 2010 +6 months

Well just installed a 30 day trial of mcafee And must say it looks more professional then norton. Think it's going to Mcafee.

But back to the question

Wich one is better

criteria:
virus detection:
speed:
used resources (reason why I think of using McAfee over Norton)
updates
...

Hmm some years ago I had McAffee, and promptly ended up with the Monkey B, a friend suggested Norton's and I have been a fan eversince, they may have programs that are resource heavy (Especially since I have the whole suite and then some) it tells me the minute an update is available and that seems to be near to once a day at least, but then as I said the whole hog (no puns plz) AV, internet security, cleansweep, ghost and winfax so yeah it updates fine

The update frequency of norton and mcafee is the same every thursday exept when a huge virus is loose and they release urgent releases. I am now using Mcafee and it looks nice IMHO . And more importantly I recently was experiencing Blue screens of death that might have been Norton releated (according to windows XP knowledge base) none so far on McAfee. I also had the whole suite. It was not that great. when Norton did a system check and started cleaning my registry and Macromedia's flash wouldn't work any more. so I guess it's a matter of taste. Personally I like the professional look of Mcafee it give me freedom to do what I want. Norton is more constrained (to prevent users from doing harm I guess). Well thats my 2 cents after 1 day of Mcafee use.

basicly what I am saying is.

the "I use it so it must be great" argument ins't that good of an argument I need facts. or coparasions of personal use(like meaculpa).

check this news. only valid for US residents that bought McAfee 3 & 4 as McAfee got sued by Norton.

maybe it's because morbo brought up the matter in this thread; who's better? who's better at suing?

The German antivirus-program by GData receives very good reviews - regularly. Even better than Norton vs. McAfee. Although it's seemingly quite slow.

Kaspersky (was ist Kaskerky ?) has the good thing of using two ( ! ) Engines at the same time - which I find very innovative. In German reviews this "game" gets fairly good results with this technique.

I use F-Prot because I've always done so. I'm "hooked" since the mid-90s . Gas also quite good results, I think.

Norten and McAfee are more or less t the same level, so to say.

NOD32 is the best I've used. AVG is the next I would choose, if I couldn't get NOD.

I use AVG. It's free and I don't download that much stuff, anyways.
