I had a weird fight: the earth elemental I faced was rather tough and I had no health potions/mana potions/arrows or even a bow. So I tried battlefields. After 40 minutes, I had 34 health potions, 21 mana potions, lots of boosts and so much equippement that my two characters crawled back to the Battlefields Camp to sell all those junk.
Came from the BF, killed the earth elemental with a couple of swings and proceeded further.

Well, I don't use the BF for fights - I have my pride - even in going under

That was early Act 1 .
I wanted to shoot him with a bow. But imagine my surprise when I opened my inventory and remembered that I... sold my bow. Without healing potions and every character with 1/10 of their health (okay, the DK has Heal, not that it is going to do him much good) I thought that sleeping during combat was a bit weird.

The earth elementals on the teleporter island are a little tougher than the earth elementals in act 2, especially since they can come in groups, and use ranged attacks.

@Raze... "a little tougher"? A little tougher? I'd call that British understatement. They came in hordes! And placed themselves in a safe distance, so they could weaken me with their earth curse (my char in the middle, or the DK) and then.... they started with earthquake and one after the other....
Hmph..."a little tougher"...

Thanks for the tips Ben et. al. for handling hardcore, I accidentally switched and am having quite a hard time in Act I; first time through too. The creatures play rough but so do I. It seems having the DK as a mage is not the best idea... learning in the process.

With "Elemental Defense" it's a little bit easier, especially for the party. I guess you get that skill from the illusionist's grave in act 2 , and I used Earth as defense, because I met so many earth elementals. Worked quite good.
