That's the point. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> The old story files have not been updated with the quest information from finding and moving the cure ingredients, so by following the steps in a safe order, you can trigger the cut scene at the mushroom cave rock.
I'm not sure if the imp hero and his wife usually disappear if you do not send him home. The mushroom spore quest entry is just a cosmetic problem. Not completing other quests should not effect the workaround, but using the workaround may effect your ability to complete other quests.
