Hello,

I have made it all the way to Samuel's lair, but I don't seem to have a hope in hell of defeating his guards. My characters are level 10, so how am I supposed to kill four lvl 14 monsters?! I have cleared all other levels pretty much, and most of the quests, so I don't see how I can pump up my guys any more. In any case, the xp jump from 10 to 11 is huge, and I doubt the few unresolved quests would bump me up to a level needed to kill these guys. It isn't even a close fight, but a slaughter... My DK is a warrior, and I'm a mage. They cut down my warrior faster than I can chain drink potions, and my mage's elemental fire/water blast barely takes a chunk out of them. I'm dead in like three seconds... I'm playing on tactical... Surely there is something I'm missing?!

I took out aggressive mode and left my chars both at the door. The melee DK came and I killed them there - if my health was low => I took the exit.

After that, I left my warrior DK at the door, went into single sneak mode and approached each ranger DK carefully. I used arrows, but I'm sure, you can do this in spellwise way also.

I was lvl 10 and played on tactical.

Their elemental resistances are on 16 - slash/pierce/crush on 0.

Having that same problem and both my guys are warriors. I walk in there and just get trashed. It is a bit frustrating to be honest. But hopefully the advice above will help out somewhat. I hope

just make sure you have plenty of potions to heal with.I summoned my skeleton and hammered one at the time while using my elemental attack now and again. remeber your pause key it comes in handy in situations like that.

Ycore, I'm bewildered now and checked my save again => the DK are lvl 12, not 14 and my difficulty slider says => tactical.

Are you playing on hardcore? I'm making screenies and will upload to show the correct target distance for sneak (with bow, but magic should work as well).

Same was for the melee ones => I went into pause and then hit the exit, if my health was low - DK survival is pretty low, so they don't regenerate fast. It is important NOT to run into the middle, but keep standing at the door and wait for Sammy to hold his speech - then the melee came one by one. I concentrated on one in melee, sent my archer into safe distance a few steps away (not leaving the door area) and let her shoot, so I could concentrate on my DK for potions.

I played on hardcore and had 5 skill points in a magic missile thingy. I sneaked a bit, launched a missile. Ran back out of side when they approached, started over again etc etc. Untill the guard came so close I couldn't sneak away anymore and attacked him head-on. I did this to pick out every guard one by one, was a challenge though

First thing you should do is try and take them one by one. Make sure you use the pause button when you need to drink your potions. It helps a lot to pause, it gives more time to think. If you still can't beat them two on one, then use your battlefield option. There are lots of quest in battlefield to level you up, Not to mention there is tons of monsters their to kill.

Yep, they are definitely level 14 in my game on tactical. I'd make a screenshot, but I'm not at home, but trust me, they are level 14 for whatever reason.

I'll try keeping my main character near the door, with my DK in front using sneak. My main character sucks so far, it doesn't seem like magic is worth it... I have an intelligence of 26, and an elemental blast with 2 fire points and 1 water point, but it barely scratches most monsters, while using 160 out of my total 550 magic points each shot.

In any case, the problem so far is that when I move my DK forward, he gets pounded by two melees and pelted with fire arrows. He literally almost gets instantly incinerated (200HP). I have to chain drink potions to keep up. He also uses a 2 handed sword, and is lucky to get in one swing for the enemies four swings.

Anyways, I haven't tried using sneak, which I'll do tonight. Thanks for the help. I really hate having to use the cheesy "use the exit" technique, but if that's what it takes...

Thanks again,

Ycore

I believe you, if you say you're lvl 14 - I'm wondering about my game now (says tactical and save version 1.44 )

maybe you don't need the "cheesy" tactic, but you should keep your chars definitely at the door, so your enemies don't come rushing in all at once.

I actually did use sneak to get by the patrols, but I did take out a few deathknights that spotted me. The main difference is that the patrols were level 13, and I only had to handle one at a time. It was still a tough fight that would require that my DK drink about eight healing potions. These guys are level 14 however, and there's four of them.

I didn't think about using sneak in this scenario, simply because I didn't plan on sneaking by them. However, I now see how this might allow me to single them out to take them on one by one, which will obviously help out quite a bit.

My savegame is version 1.45, maybe they boosted the level of Samuel's guards in this version?

Thanks for all the help-- now I can't wait until work is over so I can give it a try

I did it the eassy way.
My hero is a shield-wearing warrior specialised in slashing, and my Death Knight is a Two-Handed sword wearing warrior.
They were both lvl 10. I played on tactical.
I killed each Death Knights in 4 or 5 five blows.
They hit hard tough.
But that was not a problem, I just used potions, my warriors were though enough.

As you can see, it's quit unchallenging. I even consider to just stop playing and restart again with a mage/warrior combination.

Knowing my way of playing I would just tank all the death knights on my warrior and blast them with my wizard, using the whirlwind attack a bit and lots of potions ( life for warrior, mana for mage ).

Yeah, that's what I was thinking - so, I took my 1.45 partition, saved a 1.44 game into 1.45 (one Citadel level lower, just to make sure) - checked difficulty level and version - went up into the lair... lvl 12 DK.

http://www.kiya1.de/beyond/act1screens/Act1SamDK14510.jpg

Reloaded - changed into hardcore (it IS hardcore, can't change back) => lvl 12 DK, but I needed more potions in melee - and had to go a bit nearer to target the ranger DK with arrows (missing percentage was higher).

Last try in my case is going to be "action" now => Still lvl 12, but game was easier than tactical, only needed 6 shot to kill a ranger DK.

Thought, there was a difference, the difficulty would kick in after saving and reloading => nope. I'm giving up now... my game is lvl 14 resistant

[color:"yellow"]Ycore, are you still wearing the Citadel armour? If so, change to the best stuff you've got before entering Sammy's lair, ok? [/color]

Wait, I think I have the solution... did you visit the Battlefields a lot? IIRC, enemy level is adequate to own level - so, leveling up in BF causes the enemies in-game to be stronger (I didn't, therefore my lvl 12 DK).
