This is correct - the pit only opens via correct sequence - but you have 2 ways to leave this level.
1. Open pit and touch skull in there to open the exit or
2. Fight all enemies and the golem guarding the exit as the last one. then the stairway is open as well, see?
If you look the picture again => do you see the statue standing there? This will be your last enemy, if you disregard the sequence. And if you do the sequence correctly => it will disappear. Both possibilities open this exit.
