After going to the General room and getting the book, I head back and use the lever to open the door to the north, but it will not unlock. I go back and put the lever back and still it does not unlock. I know I am asking a lot of questions, but I just got the game (I really loved the last one <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />, but this one is giving me fits right off the bat.

The lever is not for that door. It opens a wall in the eastern section of that area (nr 27 on this map). You have to go through the corridor that is now accessible(trapped), and defeat the guards in the room behind it, then go up to samuel's chamber. There you'll find the key for that door to the north.
