If you put points into a skill you don't find useful, you can always "unlearn" the skill and reassign the points. Of course, it's not free, but sometimes having a point or two is handier than having piles of gold.
After the first couple of levels, I found myself saving skill points and now I only assign them as and when circumstances dictate.
