One point. I did as you did, and yes, I did miss out on completing a few quests, but most of the others were still viable. I chose to wait when asked if ready to go and when I went to all the areas I hadn't completed, the quests were still active. Even the Hero going back to his wife still worked. So yes, bad design decisions, but not fatal.
