It's just a hunch in your case - I've played the game a long time ago, so I fear you'll really have to check your own dialogue book, sorry. I don't know, if this "killer sentence" (it's my word creation, BTW) pops up earlier or only if you ask about the armour.
Did you check my other link? Here I gave an example of how the dialogue should work. Sadly, this breaker wasn't taken out in the last patch - I don't know if it's a program code error or a "punishment" (fibbing and quitting the conversation), due to game plot.

By reading your 1st post - I found all requirements in there:
- you gave the King his letter
- he told you about the noble in Verdistis
- this should normally lead to the dialogue as I showed you in my 2nd link.
