Okay, so I'm getting near the end of the game... done essentially every side-quest and such... and for some reason, my games won't load anymore. As soon as they start loading, the progress indicator moves the slightest bit, and boom, I crash back to the desktop and get the Windows XP error report message.

I've tried backing up my savegames, uninstalling and then reinstalling (v1.34), but the same thing happens. I can start a new game, save, and then load the new save game just fine... its only the old saves from that particular game. I always keep multiple save archives in ANY game I play to avoid this kind of frustration, but unfortunately, all four or so of my saves have the same problem. They're all from within about an hour of one another... and they're all in the Dark Forest area.

Tried a few other things too, tried running in software mode, turning sound acceleration down a notch, deleting the files in the \dynamic folder, etc. No luck, though now I figure its because the saves are corrupted.

Is there any way on this God-forsaken planet that I can salvage something from this situation? If nothing else, say, using a save editor to move the character to a different location or something? I was just about to teleport to the Council and bang the gong, so I needn't fool with any other areas that I've already been to...

Here's the message from the error.txt file:

Error at Thu Jul 01 04:00:39.765 2004

Error copying savegames\game1\inv.b2 to dynamic\minventb.000

And here's the message from the Windows error report, in case it helps:
AppName: div.exe
AppVer: 1.0.0.34
ModName: slash1.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0
Offset: 0001d531

Thanks in advance for any help.

Check the saved game folder to see if inv.b2 actually exists. It is a zero byte file, so you can simply copy that file from a working save, or create a new empty file with that name.

Check the number of files in the saved game folder (in '..\Divine Divinity\Run\savegames'). Missing files might cause the game to crash when trying to load. A new game should have 22 files, after going to either Verdistis or the Dark Forest it should have 27 and after going to both it should have 32.

.0 / .x0 = Aleroth, Ars Magicana, etc
.1 / .x1 = Verdistis, Council Hall
.2 / .x2 = Dark Forest

There were only 31 files in the folder, and inv.b2 was missing. Created a new file with that name, and it worked.

Thanks Raze, you're my new hero.

That's very cool Raze. I wish I'd have seen this post back a while when I had the same problem. Fortunately, I went into the Dark Forest and only lost a couple hours (mostly find my way through the quest for where the trolls are attacking the camp, etc. I had a save from just before entering the forest and was able to start from there and never had the problem again.

Just finished the game... finally!
