Hi there,

I just purchased Beyond Divinity, and have encountered a problem that a few others seem to have. When I try to test or run Beyond Divinity in the configtool menu I get the error window telling me that it needs to be shut down. I get the message:-

configtool MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I have read other posts in this forum that explain this problem, but I'm not very good with computers. However I will try to explain what I've done so far.

I don't know if I should update my drivers etc., and even if I did I don't know how to do it. But I have removed all DivX stuff on my computer and the config.div does read as a DIV file. I have reinstalled the game but nothing has changed. I have Norton Anti Virus and I have disabled and enabled Auto-Protect, but it doesn't change anything. I tried to delete the config.div, slashed.cfg and slashed-d3d6.cfg files from the folder (however there wasn't even a slashed-d3d6.cfg file in the folder that I could find) but the configuration program didn't recreate them. I have also installed the V 1.45 patch (Australian version - I'm from Australia) but that didn't do anything.

If it helps I'll put down the specs of my computer, although I don't really know if they are good or bad, sorry.

Windows XP
Intel Celeron 2.0 Ghz
256 MB RAM
SiS650 32MB Shared Graphics

I think that's right. If there is something else that could help that I could add then please tell me. Sorry if I'm vague, I'm really not a computer wizz, I just play games <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Also I have no idea what "updating your drivers" means.

Also, I have Divine Divinity installed on my computer and it works fine.

Sorry about this, I know this post is alot like other threads. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated as I have been looking forward to getting this game because I loved the first game.

Thanks

Rhand,

I suspect you have the same problem I did which was that your drivers are not up to date. Go to the web-site of the company that makes the drivers for you graphics card and find the latest patch. The version you are running probably doesn't support version 9.0 of DirectX. (Take a look at my other thread to see what Raze suggested and what finally worked for me.) Don't give up. It took me 2 days of trying before I finally figured out what I was doing wrong.

Yes it is.

Maybe windows update will have it in the graphics card section?

Or whatever the section is called.

Okay, I'm doing the Windows update thing where it checks if anything needs updating. I also did the SiS online Chipset Identification System thing and it came up with this:

North Bridge Chipset: 650
South Bridge Chipset: 961
Graphics Processing Unit:

Related drivers:
Categories Device Name Available for Download

Graphics Download
AGP SiS Acceleration Graphic Port Download
IDE SiS IDE Controller Download
Audio SiS 7012 Audio Controller Download
LAN SiS 900 Fast Ethernet Controller Download

As you can see both Graphics Processing unit and the Garphics catagory are blank. Also, the Windows update thing said there were 0 Driver Updates. Can anyone tell if this is good or bad?

And I am downloading a SiS UniVGA3 Graphic Driver. Does that help?

Thanks so far

In your Control Panel, System applet, Device Manager tab (may be a little different in XP), what does it list under 'Display adapters'? That should help you find the correct drivers.

The only drivers listed on MS' site are those that have gone through their certification program. No listed drivers may mean the company has not spent the time or money for this, or there may be an update that is too new to be certified.

Drivers can be downloaded from SIS' Download Center, or more specifically, the 'IGP Graphics Drivers, SiS650 & SiS740 series, Windows XP' web page.

If the UniVGA3 Graphic Driver you mentioned downloading above listed SiS650 under Product Supported, then that should be the correct one. The zip file will contain an install program and/or instructions on how to update the drivers.

I will try to walk you through this step by step although systems are different.

Once you have downloaded the zip file, unzip to a folder of your choice. (Make sure you remember the folder name you will need it in a bit)

Now Find the My computer icon (usually you have to left click on the Start button on an XP machine but sometimes it is present on your desktop.

Right click on the My computer icon.

Select Manage (Left click)

Select Device Manager (Left click)

Click the + next to the Display Adapters on the right side of the
Computer Management Window to expand the tree.

Right Click on the Device driver listed just below the display adapters
in the tree. (It should say something like SiS650.

Left click on Properties

Left click on the Driver Tab

Left click on the Update Driver Tab

Select Next

Select Search for a Suitable Driver and click Next

Unselect everything except specify a location. You want to force it
to select your driver from the folder where you just downloaded your
updates. Type in the folder name from above. (You wrote it down hopefully or
you can browse for it.)

Click Ok and it should perform the update and then ask you to reboot.

After you have rebooted, if your display does not look quite right, you may have to set the properties of the screen. Just right click on a blank area on
the screen select properties and set them to where you are comfortable.

After you have done the above, click start. Click run and type in dxdiag.
Click on the display tab and see if the driver was updated. You can then run diagnostics by clicking on Test Direct3d and Test Direct Draw. (You will see spinning cubes for 3d and black and white squares for direct draw if things are going well.

Note : you probably should run dxdiag beforehand and record the driver and file information. If you have to you can go through the same steps above and revert to the old driver. XP is pretty smart about things like that.

I hope I have provided you with enough details to work through this. Again don't get discouraged, I have a degree in Computer Science and it still took me some work to get up and running (Mainly because I didn't read the read me files that the driver manufacturers always include in their downloads)

Good Luck
